Nestle Fav'rites Halloween Habits Survey Reveals Canadian Adults Are Halloweenies

Plus - When it comes to Halloween treats, Mom and Dad have sticky fingers

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 21, 2008) - The inaugural Nestle Fav'rites Halloween Habits survey explored Canadians' feelings about October 31st - and found adults tend to be Halloweenies, people who embrace the traditions of the day. The survey revealed nearly four in ten Canadian adults celebrate Halloween at work, and nearly half will attend a Halloween party. Plus, four in ten adults will wear a costume on October 31st and 80 per cent will hand out treats at their door.

The national poll was conducted by Harris Decima on behalf of Nestle Fav'rites, Canada's favourite peanut-free variety of Halloween multi-packs.

"It seems Canadian adults are Halloweenies, not Hallowontees," said Valerie Bussieres, Assistant Marketing Manager, Nestle Fav'rites. "They take pride in having the scariest house on the block and the best treats in town. This survey clearly shows that Halloween is not just for kids - Canadian adults love all the spooky traditions of October 31st."

But when it comes to Halloween treats, it seems that mom and dad are full of tricks. The survey also revealed that close to half of parents admit to trying to sneak treats from their kids' loot bags:

- Dads seem to be more successful swipers, since 74% of fathers claim they rarely or never get caught in the act. But moms are close behind - 70% get away with their sweet crime.

- A quarter of all parents surveyed admit they're ready to stealthily swipe sweets whenever they can, while one in five wait until the bewitched hour when their children are asleep to make a move.

- It's true! Parents DO pick their favourites - keep an especially close eye on Kit Kat and Coffee Crisp bars - nearly a quarter (23%) of parents admit these are the bars they sneak more than any other!

- Traditions die hard. Nearly half of the parents surveyed claimed they frequently caught their own parents or siblings sneaking their Halloween treats when they were children.

The survey also noted interesting regional differences in the Halloween habits of Canadian adults.

- Ghosts and goblins may feel most at home in Atlantic Canada, where 89% are set to hand out treats, 65% decorate their homes and 63% carve a pumpkin. That's a bump up from the national average, which shows 78% give away treats, 54% will decorate their homes, and nearly 58% plan to carve a pumpkin.

- Halloween lovers may also find their field of dreams in Manitoba and Saskatchewan - where 88% are set to hand out treats to kids - ten percentage points higher than the national average.

- Quebeckers are least likely to celebrate the day. Only 61% of Quebeckers are likely to give away Halloween treats, versus the national average of 78% who are likely to hand them out; and only 31% celebrate Halloween at work, compared to the national average of 54%.

"We have research that shows parents choose kid appeal as the most important feature when buying Halloween treats for trick or treaters," said Bussieres. "And, to make sure that they are providing Halloween treats that are safe for children who have peanut allergies, products that were peanut-free was the second most important attribute moms and dads considered when purchasing Halloween treats."
