DENVER, CO--(Marketwired - August 18, 2016) - As addiction treatment and behavioral healthcare officials convene in Denver today for the National Conference on Addiction Disorders (NCAD), they're faced with a daunting reality: Forty-four people are dying from overdoses of prescription drugs alone each day according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Netsmart, the nation's leading provider of addiction management and treatment software, is doubling its focus on solutions and expertise to help addiction services providers mitigate the impact of the growing opiate addiction epidemic. The company is adding to its suite of solutions, providing leadership from nationally-recognized addiction management and treatment expert Bill Connors, MSW, and advocating on Capitol Hill for improved coordination of care for individuals with substance use disorders.
Netsmart helps providers, regardless of treatment philosophy, streamline processes to address the increased demand for services.
"We have long considered Netsmart to be a teammate, not only because they provide tools to help in our clients' recovery, but because they know what it means to walk alongside us as we work to impact lives." said Denise Popp, director of Information Technology at Rockford, Il.-based Rosecrance.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
Opioid treatment providers are facing a significant challenge to increase operational efficiency in the face of growing drug dependence so their clients can receive better care and experience improved outcomes. Netsmart has been delivering MAT provider solutions since 1978. The company's latest solution release, the integrated, web-based myAM CareRecord™ (EHR) harnesses close to 40 years' experience with MAT philosophies.
The myAM solution provides electronic dispensing, scheduling, lab testing and billing capabilities, while streamlining complex tasks with technological efficiency, all in compliance with DEA and FDA regulations. The integrated myAM solution includes best practices garnered from working across Netsmart's 200+ opiate treatment provider client base.
Abstinence-based Treatment Providers
Netsmart's other proven CareRecords (TIER®, myAvatar® and myEvolv™) include workflow systems that allow addiction treatment clinicians to smoothly integrate and formalize existing case management and scheduling activities. The CareRecords deliver nationally recognized assessments and clinical tools to facilitate all levels of addiction treatment.
Leadership from the Front Lines of Care
To effectively marshal its collective resources to address the drug epidemic in collaboration with addiction treatment providers, Netsmart has named Senior Vice President Bill Connors, MSW, to the newly created position of general manager of Addiction Management and Treatment. Connors is a member of the board of the Addiction Technology Transfer Center Network (ATTC). A licensed clinical social worker with experience in inpatient psychiatric hospitals, addiction treatment, outpatient clinics, and in-home family therapy settings, Connors is also a nationally-recognized expert on software implementation within substance use treatment communities.
"Bill's appointment to this key role continues our ongoing commitment to work for -- and advocate on behalf of -- our client providers," said Netsmart CEO Mike Valentine. "This new role is designed to collaborate with the addiction management and treatment communities to help us craft solutions that meet their needs and positively impact the lives of millions who are struggling with this epidemic."
"Netsmart has longstanding success with treatment providers, community mental health centers, outpatient, inpatient and residential facilities," said Connors. "I'm honored to lead this effort and draw upon those relationships, my personal knowledge and my clinical experience to help us guide individual clients as they negotiate these challenging times."
Connors' appointment is in keeping with Netsmart's track record of seeking executive leadership from the medical and clinical communities it serves. Dennis Morrison, Ph.D., former CEO of the Center for Behavioral Health (CBH), serves as Netsmart's chief clinical officer, while Ian Chuang, M.D., with an extensive background in clinical practice and healthcare IT, is the company's chief medical officer.
Advocating for Persons with Substance Use Disorders
Netsmart, a founding member of the Behavioral Health IT Coalition, has been a strong advocate for updates to 42 CFR Part 2 privacy regulations, which in current form, hinder patients from receiving safe, effective, high quality substance use treatment and whole-person care. Under current law, a medical doctor in primary care may not know that he or she is prescribing pain medication to someone with a history of addiction.
