New Affordable Rental Housing Project for Families Opens in Regina


REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwired - July 27, 2016) - The Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan, along with the City of Regina and Gabriel Housing Corporation, today celebrated the official opening of six new rental units for families with complex needs.

The Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), Muhammad Fiaz, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Regina Pasqua on behalf of the Honourable Donna Harpauer, Minister of Social Services and Minister Responsible for the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), His Worship Michael Fougere, Mayor of the City of Regina, and Doug Moran, Chief Executive Officer of Gabriel Housing Corporation, made the announcement today.

The building consists of 2 two-bedroom units, 2 three-bedroom units and 2 four-bedroom units. Located at 2059 Edward Street, the six unit facility will serve Regina and surrounding area and include support services that empower families to attain a healthy lifestyle in many aspects of their lives including the home, employment and education/training, as well as spiritual and recreational needs.

Quick facts:

  • The federal and provincial governments, through CMHC and SHC, are jointly contributing $810,000 under the $92 million Canada-Saskatchewan Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) 2014-2019 Agreement.
  • Gabriel Housing Corporation provided a combined contribution of $758,000 in mortgage financing and land equity. The City of Regina contributed $90,000 towards the project.
  • Gabriel Housing Corporation strives to contribute, manage and administer affordable and safe housing to Métis urban dwellers.
  • Gabriel Housing Corporation and Aboriginal Family Services Centre (AFSC) have signed a Service/Rental Agreement for the building.
