New Canter Courses Help Educators Meet Common Core State Standards

Educators Learn Strategies to Bring Students to a Standard Level of Proficiency in Math and Writing

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - Apr 19, 2012) - Canter, a leader in professional development for educators, now offers two new graduate courses to prepare middle and high school teachers to help students meet the Common Core State Standards in mathematics and English language arts. Differentiation in the Mathematics Classroom and Writing Strategies for Increasing Achievement in Any Content Area are designed to help educators bring all of their students to a standard level of proficiency, even if they enter a grade level with gaps in knowledge in these areas.

The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). According to its mission statement, "The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers."

How can teachers bring students of diverse abilities and needs to an equal level of competence, especially given the cumulative nature of mathematics proficiency? In Differentiation in the Mathematics Classroom, educators learn how to apply grade-appropriate, differentiated instruction methods to provide students with multiple paths to understanding content. Through these strategies, teachers learn to help students master fundamental skills and concepts, internalize content, visualize key concepts, and collaborate to solve problems. Featured presenters include Carol Ann Tomlinson, Ph.D., a leading authority in the area of differentiated instruction; Grace Smith, Ph.D.; Stephanie Throne, Ph.D.; and Edward J. Thomas, Ph.D.

Improving students' writing skills can also help improve their comprehension of any subject. Writing Strategies for Increasing Achievement in Any Content Area provides a systematic approach to teaching writing that has been shown to help boost student proficiency. Using the Structured Process Approach, teachers, whatever their primary subject, can learn how to help students break down the writing process into manageable tasks. While content-area teachers will benefit from the course's step-by-step strategies, traditional writing teachers can also learn new research-based techniques. Featured presenters include George Hillocks Jr., Ph.D., a leading authority on writing instruction; Elizabeth Kahn, Ph.D.; and Judith Langer, Ph.D.

Walden University's Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership is now Canter's exclusive academic partner. With a shared vision to help teachers enhance their effectiveness in the classroom, Walden and Canter courses are rooted in the same content, feature many of the same educational experts, and are focused on a theory-to-practice approach.

Differentiation in the Mathematics Classroom and Writing Strategies for Increasing Achievement in Any Content Area are both available online or in print & DVD learning format. For more information, visit www.Canter.net.
