New College of Trades an Important First Step: Building Trades Support Armstrong Report Recommendations

HAMILTON, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 16, 2008) - The Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario today announced its support in principle for the establishment of the College of Trades to oversee the apprenticeship and training agenda in Ontario.

"Today's announcement marks the start of a new era for the skilled trades in Ontario," said Patrick Dillon, business manager and secretary-treasurer of the Council. "The College of Trades will allow industry experts greater input over all aspects of skills training in this province. This is something that the construction industry has been seeking for a long time."

In the summer of 2007, Tim Armstrong, a respected former deputy minister, was asked to perform a consultation on the expansion of compulsory/restricted certification under the Trades Qualification and Apprenticeship Act and the Apprenticeship and Certification Act. His report to the Ontario government in April of 2008 made a number of recommendations, the key one being the establishment of the College of Trades.

"I would like to congratulate Mr. Armstrong for the groundwork he did leading up to this announcement," said Dillon. "The building trades look forward to working with Mr. Whitaker as he tackles the important task of advising the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities on the structure and functions of the College. There is a great deal of work to do to ensure that we have an effective and responsive mechanism to oversee skills training in Ontario so we are ready to meet the demands of owner-clients looking to invest here. We also have a responsibility to ensure that our youth see the trades as a safe and rewarding career choice."

The Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario is an umbrella organization that represents construction workers in Ontario.
