New Fibre Link for the Michener Institute

MARKHAM, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 3, 2012) - Metro Fibrewerx Inc. announces the completion of a fibre network at The Michener Institute for Health Sciences that links the St. Patrick Street campus in downtown Toronto to GTAnet, the member owned Regional network that provides direct high speed network connectivity to organizations in the research, education, health and public sector community in the greater Toronto area. GTAnet is providing Internet access to Michener. The new fibre network was installed in a micro trench a few inches wide and up to 12 inches deep in the streets from St. Patrick along Elm and up Elizabeth Street to the destination point at GTAnet. Several ducts were laid in the micro trench and the fibres for The Michener Institute network were air-blown through them.

"The fibre, supported by cooperation between Michener, University Health Network, GTAnet and Metro Fibrewerx is to support higher speed connectivity to the local Research and Education (R&E) institutions in the Toronto area as well as the global R&E community through ORION. Michener has a long history of training professionals who serve in the hospitals; the downtown core of which is a part of this R&E community" said Thomas A. Goldthorpe, Chairman of GTAnet.

"Metro Fibrewerx is pleased to turn over the new fibre network to The Michener Institute. The fibre link gives Michener access to increased broadband capacity. The network has spare fibres in it that will accommodate the Institute's future needs for a long time to come. Michener's network is another part of a series of fibre rings we are installing in downtown Toronto" said Alex Smith, President and CEO of Metro Fibrewerx.

"The upgrade to a high speed fibre network will improve the Michener Institute's ability to interface with other schools and hospitals across the GTA, Canada and internationally. This new connection will enable our faculty and students to access media-rich digital and visual technologies for the purpose of health care simulation education and interprofessional collaboration," explained Paul Gamble, President and CEO, The Michener Institute.
