New Home Construction Slowed in January

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 8, 2011) - January figures released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) reveal that total new home starts in the Oshawa Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) declined by 60 per cent compared to the same month last year. Only single-detached homes began construction last month. In all three of Oshawa's submarkets, home starts were significantly lower than in 2010 and were below the long term historical average.

"Housing starts in Oshawa have started the year slow, following a declining trend in new home sales beginning in the second half of 2010," said Inna Breidburg, Market Analyst with CMHC's Ontario Business Centre. "New home construction should improve as the Durham region benefits from stable housing demand and having a large share of the GTA's buildable low-rise lots," added Breidburg.
