New HR Research: 45% of Managers Lack the Skills to Coach and Develop Employees

New SilkRoad Research Examines Performance Reviews in the Workplace

Among the findings, 45% of managers lack the skills to coach and develop employees.

Why the dissatisfaction?

  • 73% of HR professionals reported inconsistent performance standards across the organization
  • 58% reported a weak connection between employee performance and compensation
  • 32% do not have the time to assess employee performance throughout the year

Room for improvement

  • 37% of those surveyed reported that they will be utilizing technology this year to improve their performance review process
    • Through automated performance reviews, HR professionals can save time to focus on training managers on things like giving effective feedback

Methodology

SilkRoad conducted the "Performance Management" research using an online survey instrument (SurveyMonkey). Findings were compiled and aggregated by a third-party agency. 90% of respondents had more than 250 employees at their organization; 46% had more than 1,000. 89% had five or more years of experience in Recruiting, Learning, Development, or HR. 78% had more than 10 years. Survey respondents' were at a senior level in their companies: titles ranged from Chief Human Resources Officer, V.P. and Director of HR, to Director of Personnel and Vice President of Talent Management.
