New IBM System Will Reduce Drug Errors for Saskatchewan Residents

MARKHAM, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - May 2, 2007) - An IBM system will provide Saskatchewan physicians and pharmacists with fast, accurate access to information and tools to help prescribe optimum drug therapies and avoid potentially fatal errors.

The Province of Saskatchewan contracted IBM to design, build and maintain a province-wide community drug information system. Once complete, the system will enable authorized healthcare professionals in clinics, offices, hospitals and dispensaries anywhere in the province to prescribe, access and view any Saskatchewan resident's community drug information history online.

Using the secure system, which resembles a Web site, authorized users can view a patient's community prescription record, including a drug history, any new drugs recently prescribed through the system but not yet filled and any allergy alerts. Prescribers who use the system also will be able to create electronic prescriptions beginning the Province's move towards eliminating the need for paper prescriptions.

The system is built on IBM software and licensed to Saskatchewan users. IBM also provided consulting, project management, development and testing of the system in consultation with Saskatchewan providers. Currently 1,200 authorized providers are registered and community drug records for all Saskatchewan residents are available in the system.

Recently Canada Health Infoway and IBM signed a preferred solution agreement to make it faster and simpler for provinces and territories to acquire drug information systems. Canada Health Infoway recognized IBM's demonstrated understanding of the requirements for a pan-Canadian electronic health record and commitment to interoperability.

The IBM Drug Information System is the first in a series of services offered by Saskatchewan Health as part of their Electronic Health Record strategy.
