SAN BRUNO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- April 18, 2005 -- IPWireless has launched its latest solution for interference mitigation, an enhancement that nearly triples cell edge performance in TD-CDMA wide-area mobile broadband networks. MusePlus™ technology, IPWireless' advanced multi-user detection system, mitigates both intra-cell and inter-cell interference, allowing operators to offer new services and increased service levels to subscribers.

Interference is the largest limiting factor for both voice and broadband wide-area wireless networks. Intra-cell interference, or, interference between each user within a cell, reduces system capacity. As more users are active, the coverage of a cell shrinks. Called "Cell breathing," it's a common issue encountered in FDD CDMA networks. When a network is deployed with a single frequency, many users will be in an overlap area between cells, and inter-cell interference becomes the major influence on system performance. Inter-cell interference, or, interference among cells, further decreases the overall capacity of a wireless system, decreasing both the average data throughput in a wireless broadband system and the number of simultaneous calls in a voice system.

Since it was first deployed commercially in 2002, IPWireless' TD-CDMA technology has used multi-user detection techniques on both the downlink and the uplink to address intra-cell interference and provide the high performance for which TD-CDMA is known. By constructively combining the multiple signals that are reflected off buildings in a non-line-of-sight situation, and then restoring the "orthogonality" between signals of different users in the sector so that they do not interfere with each other, this form of multi-user detection increases both the coverage of the cell and the broadband data throughput to users, and dramatically reduces the cell breathing issue that plagues other technologies. The latest interference mitigation solution, called MusePlus, simultaneously detects intra-cell as well as inter-cell interference.

Intra-cell and inter-cell interference also determine the performance at the edge of the cell. Cell edge performance is particularly important in a wireless broadband network because it determines the minimum service level an operator is able to offer a customer for both the uplink and downlink. MusePlus technology benefits operators because it increases cell performance where it's needed most, the cell edge. It raises overall service levels on uplink and downlink; extends the area in the cell getting peak performance; and raises overall usable capacity in the cell, resulting in more subscribers per sector and a lower cost per megabyte delivered. Such improvements have allowed operators with TD-CDMA networks to offer new premium services and enter new data-centric markets.

MusePlus technology has already been implemented in a number of TD-CDMA networks globally. Testing of the MusePlus platform on an operator's trial network in the United States has shown broadband data rates that are two to three times higher for users near the cell edge; increased coverage through the elimination of interference factors; and, more reliable indoor coverage for users at or near the cell edge. Another benefit for operators is that MusePlus technology is implemented directly into the TD-CDMA baseband chipset, making the added performance very low cost for the operators.
