New Jersey After 3 Doubles State Investment for Afterschool Programs in the New School Year

New Jersey After 3 Announces Afterschool Programs for 26 New Jersey Schools

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ--(Marketwire - September 8, 2010) - New Jersey After 3, a private, nonprofit organization that expands learning time in New Jersey's public schools, has leveraged more than $3.6 million to date against the $3 million it has been allocated through the New Jersey FY2011 State Budget. Despite a reduction of more than 70% to its annual state allocation from Fiscal Year 2010 ($10.4 million) to Fiscal Year 2011 ($3 million), New Jersey After 3 is again demonstrating its ability to more than double the State's investment.

New Jersey After 3 announced the selection of 18 nonprofit partners committed to delivering an evidence-based afterschool program serving approximately 3,800 students across 26 public schools throughout New Jersey. The partner finalists were identified through a competitive request for proposal (RFP) process.

New Jersey After 3's investments in these partner agencies will include funding for the afterschool program activities (staffing, supplies, etc.), year round training and professional development, technical assistance, evidence-based content, evaluation, and participation in New Jersey After 3's statewide AmeriCorps program. The resources provided by New Jersey After 3 expand student learning time by 40% and help ensure the safety, achievement and positive development of thousands of students across the state, while providing an invaluable service to working families.

New Jersey After 3 anticipates working even closer with school districts and municipalities to align resources to ensure the academic success of the 3,800+ students who enroll in these programs. Selected nonprofit organizations will operate programs each day school is in session, in close collaboration with their school partner, for three hours per day, five days per week, and at a total cost that is less than half of what other high-quality programs cost nationally.

"Once again, New Jersey After 3 has demonstrated our ability to secure private sector investment, confirming that we are a public-private partnership that delivers," stated Mark Valli, President & CEO of New Jersey After 3. "We're proud of the fact that we've been able to successfully leverage these dollars, however, the outcome of this year's RFP process is bittersweet. The 70% reduction in our State budget allocation forced a huge cut in our ability to offer afterschool programs in dozens of communities. There were so many excellent proposals that we could not support with our limited resources. This portfolio of selected finalists represents the most sustainable, high-quality programs from across our statewide network."

New Jersey After 3 is unique in that it is the only statewide nonprofit organization of its kind. The effectiveness of New Jersey After 3 programs is supported by independent data, published in April 2009 by Policy Studies Associates of Washington, D.C., documenting its positive impact on variables that have been linked to student success (including high school drop-out rates) in various studies.
