New Jersey Dentist on What Patients Can Expect From Sedation Techniques

Dr. Jerry Strauss Uses Two Types of Sedation Dentistry to Make His Patients at Aesthetic Dental Care More Comfortable, Ease Their Anxiety, and Provide the Care They Need

TOTOWA, NJ--(Marketwired - May 6, 2015) - New Jersey cosmetic dentist Dr. Jerry Strauss understands that dental visits can cause some patients anxiety. In fact, it is estimated that 9-15 percent of Americans suffer from dental phobia, which can inhibit them from receiving proper oral care. To help put his patients at ease, Dr. Strauss offers two types of sedation dentistry at Aesthetic Dental Care.

With a pill taken an hour before a patient's scheduled appointment, oral conscious sedation can place patients into a deeply relaxed state by the time they arrive at Dr. Strauss's cosmetic dentistry practice. According to Dr. Strauss, "Many of our patients who undergo oral conscious sedation enter a state that closely mimics sleep and do not remember the details of their procedure." Another option for sedation is with anesthesia administered through an IV directly into the bloodstream. To maximize the safety for his patients, Dr. Strauss utilizes a board-certified anesthesiologist to administer this sedation treatment.

The idea of having dental procedures performed while in a sleep-like state is appealing to many of Dr. Strauss's patients. However, these patients often want to know about the possible side effects of sedation dentistry. "The medication used for oral conscious sedation is non-habit forming and has very few side effects," says Dr. Strauss. While all medications and anesthetics have some associated risk, those of sedation dentistry are very minimal. With IV sedation, the most common side effect is feeling drowsy after the treatment is complete, which is why it is recommended that the patient arrange a ride home and avoid operating heavy machinery for 24 hours.

For most of the patients at Aesthetic Dental Care, the benefits of sedations dentistry far outweigh the risks. Dr. Strauss uses the consultation process as a time to examine his patients' medical records and current medications to determine their candidacy and decide which form of sedation dentistry is best for each individual. By addressing dental phobia with these state-of-the-art techniques, Dr. Strauss's patients are able to get the care they need and maintain a healthy, beautiful smile.
