New Jersey Dentist Uses Tooth Sealants as Cost-Saving Cavity Prevention

Dr. Edward Romano Uses Adult Sealants to Address the Pits and Fissures on the Tooth Surface Before Tooth Decay Is Allowed to Develop

MORRISTOWN, NJ--(Marketwired - Mar 5, 2014) - Though Dr. Edward Romano, a cosmetic dentist in New Jersey, focuses much of his practice on treatments such as porcelain veneers, teeth whitening procedures, and smile makeovers, he also knows that a beautiful set of teeth and gums must be built on a healthy foundation. Much of his general dental care is focused on the prevention of dental problems before they even develop, which is why Aesthetic Smiles of New Jersey in Morristown offers a range of treatments aimed at the prevention of cavities, gum disease, and tooth decay. While many of Dr. Romano's patients are diligent in the maintenance of their oral health, he says adult sealants can give patients an edge in the fight against cavities.

"Most patients tend to associate tooth sealants with children and early cavity prevention, but the practical use of tooth sealants does not diminish as patients age," says Dr. Romano in a recent blog post titled "The Benefits Of Adult Sealants: Cavity Insurance." He goes on to acknowledge that trying to convince an older patient who has never had a cavity or the need for sealants can be difficult -- after all, up to that point, the patient has been cavity-free. However, Dr. Romano points out that, as we age, changes in our immune system and our diets may increase our risk for cavities. "One fact is certain," highlights Dr. Romano, "pits and fissures on the surface of teeth are prone to decay -- and sealants for adults can fill in these pits and fissures to prevent future complications."

The New Jersey cosmetic dentist views adult sealants as a type of insurance policy against future cavities. He notes that a 50-year-old patient who has pits and fissures on the surface of the teeth sealed can be protected from cavities for about 10 years, as long as the sealants retain their integrity. This active prevention can save patients hundreds of dollars during that time, as the average cost of a sealant is typically $50 versus the average $200 cost of a filling. Dr. Romano says those savings, combined with the fact that applying sealants is a quick and pain-free procedure, make adult sealants an obvious choice.

Though adult sealants are typically very effective in the prevention of cavities on the surface of teeth, Dr. Romano notes that patients will still need to floss in order to remove the food and plaque that causes cavities and gum disease between the teeth. However, he says sealants are designed to serve as a significant barrier against plaque and acids, protecting teeth from cavities for years to come.
