New Jersey's New Health Insurance CO-OP Sees Enrollment Numbers Soar During 2015

CO-OP Welcomed Thousands of New Jerseyans Looking for Competitively Priced Healthcare Plans and Value-Added Benefits

NEWARK, NJ--(Marketwired - Jul 7, 2015) - Health Republic Insurance of New Jersey (HRINJ), the state's first and only non-profit CO-OP health insurance plan, saw its membership surpass 60,000 during this past Open Enrollment Period and through the first half of 2015. Only in its second year of business, the insurer offered individual insurance on and off the Health Insurance Marketplace (healthcare.gov) and small group insurance.

New features this year that added to the appeal of HRINJ health plans included some of the most competitive health insurance rates in New Jersey, multi-state provider and facility access, and more options for individuals and small groups in New Jersey. Also, all plans offered this year were open access, allowing members to see specialist providers without requiring referrals.

"We are very excited with the response to our offerings this year," says James Martin, Chief Executive Officer of Health Republic Insurance of New Jersey." As New Jersey's first and only healthcare CO-OP, we wanted to offer residents an alternative that really made a difference and aligned with our mission of serving the people of New Jersey."

Member Feedback Produces Results
CO-OPs are designed to emphasize member buy-in and Martin said the feedback HRINJ received last year resulted in attractive plans and offerings based around their member needs.

"We listened to our members over the past year and designed plans that offered some exciting features and attractive pricing that included reducing plan premiums between 10% and 20%," Martin says.

Members asking for coverage from their out-of-state doctors led to provider access in New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware through Multiplan's PHCS Healthy Directions Network. Twenty-one in-state plans were offered, including the popular Active Access Spotlight plan based around the patient centered medical home concept and the community-based Monmouth County plan, designed to create substantial savings for families.

"This year was all about choice," Martin explains. "We wanted our members to feel comfortable with the plan they chose and really select the one that fit their individual needs and their family's needs. With our Monmouth County Plan, for instance, residents of Monmouth County can take advantage of a community-based network of providers that offered lower premiums, and in some cases, $0 co-pays for generic drugs. Our Spotlight Silver Plan was attractively priced for a majority of our members seeking a quality plan with cost efficiencies."

New Value-Added Benefits and Wellness Programs
Wellness is a core component of HRINJ membership, and the CO-OP rolled out several new and innovative programs this year. HRINJ was the first health insurance company in the state to offer telemedicine through Teladoc, a service that delivers around the clock access to a healthcare provider via telephone or web at no cost to the member. Simply Smokeless™, a smoking cessation/harm reduction program, provides medications and consultations with physicians at no out-of-pocket cost to members who are trying to cut down or stop smoking. Other value-adds include GlobalFit, a fitness program that offers savings and access to gym memberships, resources and merchandise, and an ExtraCare Health card from CVS/pharmacy that provides 20% savings on CVS brand health products.

New Provider Portal Launches
In an effort to give members a quick, easy and convenient way to access doctors and other healthcare providers in the network, HRINJ designed a visually friendly provider portal. The portal offers such features as faster searching, mapping/directions, and the ability to create "favorites" and compare provider profiles.

Also this year, to help members navigate the often complex path to understanding their benefits, HRINJ initiated member education events held on a regular basis around the state.

"The chief objective of Health Republic Insurance of New Jersey is to insure that our members have health coverage, understand their benefits, stay well, and have a say in what the company does and the future benefits that we offer. That will define our success," says Martin.
