New Market Research Forecasts Retail Sales in the Middle East & Africa

Middle East and African retail was dominated by food and grocery sales in 2011, accounting for over half of total sales that year. However, while this category was largest, its sales are relatively stable year to year. Outside this dominant area, apparel, accessories, luggage and leather goods had the fastest developing sales between 2006 and 2011, growing at an annual average rate of 8% over the period. In terms of market structure, general retailers were the largest channel group, contributing nearly half towards total Middle East and African retail sales in 2011. During the review period, online retailers were the fastest-growing channel group, with a CAGR of nearly 20% and are expected to remain the fastest in the forecast period. During the review period, Middle East and African retail sales grew at a CAGR of over 7%. Canadean expects retail sales in the region to grow at a similar pace during the forecast period.

South Africa, which accounted for nearly two-fifths of the total Middle East and African retail sales in 2006, is expected to reduce to slightly above 30% by 2016. Retail sales in South Africa have grown by slightly over 3% since 2006, and are expected to grow by 6% annually through 2016. Egypt and Saudi Arabia independently are expected to continue to contribute nearly 20% to 25% of the total Middle East and African retail sales. The UAE tops the region in terms of per-capita retail spend in 2011, followed by Israel and Saudi Arabia.
