New National Dairy Council Survey Reveals More Than Half of Homes With Lactose Intolerant Family Members Are Not Meeting Dietary Guidelines for Dairy Intake

Results Released With the LACTAID® Brand for National Dairy Month Provide Insights on Dairy Consumption Habits of Families With One or More Individuals With Lactose Intolerance

RUTLAND, MA--(Marketwired - Jun 10, 2014) - To kick off National Dairy Month, National Dairy Council and LACTAID® Brand, in partnership with Mom Central Consulting, announced the results of a new survey that examines the nutrition habits of America's families who have one or more members with lactose intolerance. The survey revealed that 55% of homes with a family member with lactose intolerance may not consume the Dietary Guidelines recommended servings of dairy each day (serving = 8 fl. oz. milk or yogurt, 1.5 oz. of hard cheese), and are thus missing out on some key nutrients and health benefits. Moderate evidence indicates that the intake of dairy is associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and with lower blood pressure in adults.

The survey, conducted among more than 370 moms nationwide in April 2014, also showed that:

  • More than half of those surveyed do not realize that lactose free dairy products have all of the same nutritional and health benefits as traditional dairy products because they are real dairy! These benefits include high protein content, which can help with healthy muscles and satiety.
  • Nearly 50% of the surveyed households, within the Mom Central Network, avoid the dairy foods they crave due to fear of the discomfort it might cause them.
  • Ice cream was identified as the dairy food craved most among respondents, but often avoided because of lactose intolerance. What people may not realize is that there are lactose free ice cream options available!

"There are ways for those living with lactose intolerance to enjoy their favorite dairy foods without experiencing discomfort," said Karen Kafer, Registered Dietitian for National Dairy Council. "These findings confirm the need for better education about the benefits of dairy and dairy-based solutions for those with lactose intolerance. About the Survey
In April 2014, Mom Central Consulting (MCC) surveyed 371 Moms, who personally experience or have a family member who experiences lactose intolerance. The panel was recruited through a double opt-in process and email invitation. The 5-question survey was conducted online, programmed and analyzed by MCC. All respondents belong to the Mom Central Testing Panel, consisting of 20,000 Moms spanning across relevant demographics, such as household income, education, age, number and age of children.
