New Organization Helps Consumers Find Reputable Movers

Canadian Association of Movers: CAM establishes Chapter in Atlantic Canada Attention: City Editor, Home/Garden Editor, Lifestyle Editor, News Editor, Transportation Editor HALIFAX/NOVA SCOTIA/CONSUMER PROTECTION--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 23, 2006) - Movers from Atlantic Canada met in Halifax on January 19, 2006 under the auspices of the newly minted Atlantic Chapter of the Canadian Association of Movers (CAM).

At the top of the agenda was the shortage of skilled van foremen, packers and helpers. With the average age of professional van foremen hovering around 54 years and the difficulty in attracting new blood into the industry, movers spent the day discussing strategies to attract recruits to the moving industry.

Michael Johnston, Chairman of the new chapter, said that the Canadian Association of Movers will initiate discussions with multiple levels of government to explore new training programs and incentives to attract entrants to the moving industry.

"This is not a very sexy industry," said Johnston, "but so far no one has figured out how to use a computer to get a piano out of a house. We rely upon the skill and experience of professional movers to make that happen." Even though it is not a flashy business, satisfied customers have very high praise for the skill and professionalism exhibited by quality-oriented movers.

The movers also discussed the pressure of high fuel and insurance costs set against the tableau of a very competitive marketplace. Movers have been slower to react to fuel-price increases compared with other business sectors that typically pass through fuel increases directly to the consumer. They discussed means by which to make those costs more transparent and more easily identifiable to customers.

CAM is the sole association in Canada representing the moving industry. CAM promotes professionalism, education and certification of movers to assist customers in differentiating between dedicated, professional movers and others in the industry.
