New Pediatric Kidney Transplant Program at Cohen Children's

NEW HYDE PARK, NY--(Marketwired - July 20, 2016) - Northwell Health (formerly North Shore-LIJ Health System) has received state approval to open its first pediatric kidney transplant program at Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park later this year, elevating the health system's stature as a regional resource for the care of children with end-stage renal disease.

Once operational, the pediatric kidney transplant program will be housed within Cohen's Division of Pediatric Nephrology and include an outpatient center to maintain seamless care for transplant patients, a vital component of the crucial pre- and post-transplant phases of treatment. Existing medical, surgical and nursing teams will work closely with the new program to provide the highest level of care to patients.

Cohen Children's pediatric renal clinicians see more than 1,100 unique patients with kidney disease annually, including approximately 50 children with end-stage kidney disease and 13 dialysis patients, making it one of the largest pediatric nephrology programs in New York.

"Children requiring a kidney transplant are currently referred to other institutions in Manhattan, and return to Cohen post-operatively for long-term management," said Charles Schleien, MD, executive director of Cohen Children's, and senior vice president and chair of pediatrics at Northwell Health. "The addition of a transplant program will allow Cohen's patients to receive the full continuum of nephrologic care at the hospital, providing for greater convenience while eliminating the need for extensive travel."

The new program will be led by Ernesto Molmenti, MD, who also serves as surgical director of Northwell Health's adult kidney transplant center at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY, and Pamela Singer, MD, who will serve as medical director of the pediatric program. The program will be integrated with the Northwell Health Transplant Service. "The transplant program will complete the spectrum of chronic kidney disease services provided by the Division of Pediatric Nephrology at Cohen," Dr. Singer said.

Since the adult kidney transplant center at North Shore University Hospital opened in 2007, Dr. Molmenti and Louis Kavoussi, MD, Northwell Health's chair of urology, have performed more than 235 kidney transplants. The US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recertified the kidney transplant center after conducting a surprise survey visit in 2015 that yielded a "flawless" outcome as noted by surveyors.
