New Poll Reveals Surprising Insights Into Cannabis Culture

Majority of Cannabis Consumers Not Your Typical "Stoners"

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwired - April 20, 2016) - With "420" taking place today, Wednesday, April 20, cannabis media company Civilized has conducted a cannabis culture poll -- uncovering fascinating findings and debunking outdated stereotypes about cannabis use and lifestyle.

Earlier this month, Civilized and Environics Research Group partnered on the online poll of more than 1,000 Americans 18 years and over, revealing that perceptions of today's cannabis consumers have dramatically shifted.

"According to the poll, the majority of cannabis consumers are a far cry from the "slacker" cliché: they're married with children, educated, and employed," said Civilized Founder and Publisher, Derek Riedle. "The poll's demographics point to an under-represented consumer group we always felt existed: educated, motivated and productive members of society, who just happen to enjoy consuming cannabis casually as part of their lifestyle."

Some of the poll's key findings include:

  • 56 percent of men say that they would date someone who consumes cannabis.
  • 73 percent of cannabis consumers conceal their consumption from people closest to them, including their parents, spouses, kids, friends and co-workers.
  • 28 percent of cannabis consumers had a net household income of greater than $150,000/year.
  • Over half (53 percent) of "ex-cannabis consumers" (those who have tried it before, but no longer consume) say they would consume cannabis again if it were legal in their state.
  • 49 percent of Americans (consumers and non-consumers) believe tobacco is more harmful than alcohol or cannabis. Cannabis ranked as the least harmful of the three substances.
  • 48 percent of Americans say Snoop Dogg is a cannabis icon, while 30 percent say Tommy Chong.

"With 420 coming up -- a date engrained in cannabis culture for 45 years -- we wanted to take an in-depth look at where the culture stands today," adds Riedle. "The poll results contain more than a few surprises, but the overall trends confirm a nationwide social shift is underway. We look forward to shaking some long-held beliefs in the days to come."

An overview of the poll results will be available at Civilized.life on April 20.
