New President and Chief Executive Officer to Carry Out AFMC's New Strategic Directions!

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 18, 2005) - The Board of Directors of the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC), the national voice of Canadian medical schools, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Nick Busing as its new President and Chief Executive Officer effective October 15th, 2005.

Dr. Busing brings to this position a great deal of experience in academic medicine in Canada. Over the last ten years he has been Professor and Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Ottawa; former roles include: residency program director in the Department of Family Medicine, Assistant Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education at the University of Ottawa, President of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), and chair of the Section of Teachers of CFPC. He was Chair for four years of the Canadian Medical Forum, a partnership of nine leading medical organizations, and he has been a very effective and active member of several of its task forces. He is presently co-chair of the task force "A Human Resource Strategy for Physicians in Canada". As a member of numerous provincial and national committees relating to education and physician resource planning, Dr. Busing has worked closely with representatives of all levels of governments and other key organizations such as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Canadian Medical Association. He is well respected across the country for his leadership and negotiation skills and for his commitment to a collaborative approach in the development of national health care strategies and capacity building.

Recently the Board of Directors released its new strategic plan (www.afmc.ca/docs/2005_strategy_plan_en.pdf) founded on the principles of excellence, innovation, collaboration, and social accountability. The plan will guide AFMC's national leadership in academic medicine, aimed at producing doctors who will care for Canadians and health scientists who will generate new knowledge through research to improve health. AFMC's strategic priorities are educational innovation, leadership in academic medicine (advocacy), development of a physician and health scientist workforce, health research, and sustainability of medical schools. AFMC plans to address these priorities while helping shape the future of medical education, research and health care in response to present and future societal needs. The organization's new tag line, "Today's research Tomorrow's doctors", succinctly sums up the mission and mandate of its members.

Dr. Busing is ideally suited to help AFMC fulfill its mandate of promoting excellence in research and medical education and to be the voice of academic medicine as national health care strategies are developed to improve the quality of heath care for Canadians.
