New President to Be Given Ideas for America's 250th Birthday in 2026

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwired - June 30, 2016) - If anyone has ideas on how America might celebrate its 250th birthday 10 years from now, please get them to ideas@250in2026.org.

The invitation comes from America 250, a group of citizens developing projects and programs to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. Many of these people played prominent roles in the federal government's bicentennial commemoration in 1976.

They believe in the importance of using a major national event to bring diverse interests together in new ways. A celebration of the Declaration of Independence ought to provide the impetus for achieving "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" for as many Americans as possible.

The group, America 250, is doing the preliminary planning during the current electoral campaign and will present its conclusions to the President-elect in the form of a Transition Memorandum.

"The United States is the oldest, continuously operating democratic republic in the history of the world," said Godfrey Harris, a Los Angeles public policy consultant among the 19 people working on America 250. "The years running up to the historic milestone in 2026 offers a unique opportunity to advance the principles and practices of American democracy. But it takes vision to initiate any projects and programs that could come to fruition long after the next President leaves office."

"We hope the new president, whoever he or she might be, will start the preparations for 2026 early in their term," he added.
