SHERWOOD PARK, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - March 10, 2010) - Digital photos of the opening ceremonies will be available on Marketwire's website.
RONA inc. (TSX:RON), the largest Canadian distributor and retailer of hardware, renovation and gardening products, officially unveiled its new RONA Sherwood Park store today. The opening of the 52,000-square-foot store, located at 301 Wye Road, represents a $16 million investment in Sherwood Park and provides 72 local jobs, 40 of which are new positions.
"The people of Sherwood Park have been wonderful supporters of RONA," said Robert Dutton, RONA President and CEO. "They keep coming back because of the excellent service the store team provides and the expertise they know they can count on. This new store is one of the new generation of RONA stores, and it includes a tremendous range of products, brighter atmosphere, friendlier and more efficient design as well as our everyday competitive prices."
The new RONA replaces an older store that was located at 222 Baseline Road in Sherwood Park. It is also twice the size of the former store, providing room for more products and services for our customers. The store builds on RONA's efforts as a responsible steward of the environment and it will be the first store under the RONA banner to apply for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification in Alberta. The new TOTEM store in Strathmore, AB, and the RONA in Saint-Georges, QC, have also applied for LEED certification. Furthermore, the Calgary homes featured on My RONA Home television show obtained LEED® Canada for Homes certification – awarded largely because they were able to incorporate numerous eco-responsible products.
"Strathcona County is a dynamic region, home to people living both urban and rural lifestyles. These conditions are ideal for RONA's product and service offering," commented Mr. Dutton. "We are proud to replace an older store with our new format store that has applied for LEED certification. It proves our commitment to protecting the environment and our desire to do things right."
Everything under one roof
Experienced do-it-yourselfers, first-time homeowners and tradespeople will find what they need in the customer friendly, 52,000-square-foot store. Along with its larger sales area, the store boasts a spacious a 9,500-square-foot outdoor garden centre, a 20,000 square foot lumberyard inside and a 68,400 square foot outside yard. RONA Sherwood Park offers a full selection of over 22,000 different products.
"We're very excited about opening the doors of our new store. We look forward to greeting our existing customers from our old store, and welcoming new customers from the Strathcona County area, to an innovative store that features personalized service, a very well-planned layout to make finding products easier, and quality products at competitive prices," said store manager Dennis Daly. "Our well-trained staff will give our customers a helping hand in completing their projects, offer them eco-responsible alternatives, and support them through a range of services, such as our cut shop and special contractor desk."
RONA Sherwood Park offers building materials, finishing materials and specialized boutiques including paint, the latest decoration accessories, kitchen and bathroom cabinets, doors and windows as well as flooring.
Unlike anything else in the home improvement sector, RONA boutiques are designed to support the renovation process and make it more efficient. They allow customers to find everything they need to complete a renovation project in one single place. With the same idea in mind, RONA Sherwood Park now offers Project Guide services, a concept offering the help of knowledgeable, specially-trained staff who guide customers through the different stages of specific renovation projects. Meanwhile, RONA offers renovation and interior decoration concepts. RONA by Design are affordable trendsetting project recipes that include a selection of products and show consumers how they can achieve renovation and interior decoration projects on their own of with professional design help.
Specialized services at the new RONA Sherwood Park also include installation, kitchen design, tool rental, a cut shop, delivery and a separate counter for contractors.
LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
The Sherwood Park RONA was built following the LEED criteria for new buildings and expects to receive LEED certification for construction. The evaluation criteria includes measures to protect air quality, such as using low-emissions materials (like paint, adhesives and waterproofing materials) in the building construction, and measures for reducing energy consumption, including a white energy efficient roofing system; additional insulation in the building envelope; T5 fluorescent lighting; a high-end control system for store lighting (movement detectors); timers to regulate lighting, air-conditioning, and heating throughout the day; and low-flow sanitation equipment.
Wood from certified forests and locally manufactured materials were used for the construction. Bike racks, changing rooms and showers have been installed to encourage employees to cycle or walk to work. Finally, since RONA places so much importance on saving energy, the light fixtures for sale in the store use low-consumption compact fluorescent bulbs rather than incandescent ones.
RONA, supporting youth in the community
Accompanying Robert Dutton, President and CEO of RONA at the opening ceremony were Strathcona County Mayor Cathy Olesen, members of the RONA senior management team, store employees and many customers.
As a proud partner of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Games, RONA made a commitment to support Canadian athletes through its Growing with our Athletes program, which offered financial support to 100 top-level athletes. RONA is also a national sponsor of the Canadian Football League including the Edmonton Eskimos.
During the Sherwood Park store opening ceremony, the RONA Foundation presented a $2,500 donation to the Boys and Girls Club of Strathcona County. The RONA Foundation believes in the club's mission of helping young people achieve their full potential. The Boys and Girls Club provides opportunities for young people to strengthen and acquire new skills, develop leadership abilities, and enhance career readiness. Today's donation marks the arrival of the new Sherwood Park store and the RONA Foundation's efforts to help troubled young people believe in themselves and in their future – for their own benefit and for the good of their community.
Created in 1998, the RONA Foundation provides assistance for young people aged 12 to 30 by supporting local organizations and projects that fight school dropout rates and illiteracy or that offer training so that they can take up a trade or a profession.
