New Scholarship Honours Retired General Manager

Shaw Conference Centre Staff Eligible for Annual $1,000 Award

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - June 27, 2011) -Shaw Conference Centre staff will benefit from a new scholarship program in honour of its recently retired vice-president and general manager who served the centre from 1993 to 2011.

To be awarded annually, the $1,000 Michael Fitzpatrick Scholarship is open to a Shaw Conference Centre employee registered full-time at a post-secondary educational institution who demonstrates leadership excellence and outstanding community involvement.

"Mike promoted and exemplified our organization's values, including excellence in leadership, integrity, respect, and innovation," says Cliff Higuchi, the new vice-president and general manager. "The scholarship will honour Mike's contributions while recognizing our staff's contribution to Greater Edmonton's well-being."

Opened in 1983 and managed by Edmonton Economic Development Corporation, the award-winning Shaw Conference Centre hosted 456,000 guests and generated $48.6 million in economic impact in 2010. Certified a green venue by the Building Owners and Managers Association, the centre is currently undergoing the LEED certification process for existing buildings.
