New Teacher Survival Guide Brings Scholastic Online Resources to First Time Teachers

Free Website Includes Activities, Advice and Tips to Help New Teachers Navigate Their First Year

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - August 18, 2009) - Supporting teachers from day one, Scholastic, the global children's publishing, education and media company, announced the launch of the New Teacher Survival Guide: Resources, Tools, and Tips for New Teachers, a new site that provides materials, support and guidance to help new teachers achieve success during their early years in the classroom.

The first few years for any teacher are exciting, but extremely challenging; studies show that as many as 40% of new teachers in public schools will leave before they hit the five-year mark. With the New Teacher website, teachers in grades preK-12 will have immediate access to free resources, how-to strategies, hands-on tips, creative ideas, and teacher-to-teacher advice on succeeding during their first year in the classroom, including:

-- Monthly New Teacher Survival Guides;

-- Classroom organization and management tips;

-- Timely teaching ideas and seasonal activities;

-- Lesson plans with ready-to-print handouts;

-- Mentoring and advice columns from veteran teachers; and

-- Coupons and bonus offers for classroom books and materials.

After registration, members will gain access to special features of the New Teacher Survival Guide, including:

-- Monthly sweepstakes - Teachers get a chance to win classroom magazines, books, and other resources and products from Scholastic each month.

-- Advice from Ruth Manna - Teachers can submit questions to veteran teacher Ruth Manna, who has been in the profession for more than 20 years.

-- Monthly newsletter - Teachers get classroom tips and lesson content through a monthly survival guide, e-mailed directly to teachers.

"Scholastic is deeply committed to providing new teachers with the resources and support they need," said Francie Alexander, Chief Academic Officer, Scholastic. "The New Teacher Survival Guide is our way of both thanking them for the hard work they do each day and helping them to navigate the challenges they will face during their early years of teaching. We plan to be with them for every step of this journey."

The content found on New Teacher is drawn from across multiple divisions of Scholastic, from Classroom and Professional Magazines to Scholastic Book Clubs and Book Fairs to the vast resources of the Scholastic Classroom & Library Group and Scholastic Education.

New Teacher, which will continue to evolve in response to the demands of new teacher users, is available at www.scholastic.com/newteacher.
