New Technology Leads to Breakthrough in Pheromone Therapy for Pet Behavior Problems

Years of Scientific Research Lead to Revolutionary New Products

ORLANDO, FL--(Marketwire - Mar 2, 2012) - In a major step forward to address pet behavior issues, Sergeant's Pet Care Products, Inc. announced today revolutionary new additions to their SENTRY® line of pheromone products. The highly effective new products will soon be available at pet specialty retailers nationwide. The products all contain different varieties of pheromones that have been scientifically proven to address various behavior problems. While pheromones, which are chemicals that animals produce and use to communicate information to each other, have been used in products before, this new set of products employs varieties and delivery methods that have not been available before.

Pet parents who experience frustration over pet behavior problems like inappropriate marking, digging, scratching, barking and even separation anxiety will be happy to know that strong scientific research is at the core of the products. Scientific testing of the products' effectiveness has shown remarkable results as well, according to Dr. John McGlone, a professor and research scientist with several decades of extensive research and development experience in pheromone therapy and animal behavior who has worked with Sergeant's to develop the new pheromone products.

Dr. McGlone sees the new products as a major step forward in addressing even some of the toughest behavior problems. "Years ago, we began to realize that if we understood how dogs and cats experienced their environments, we might be able to have a much greater impact on their misbehaviors. That research has yielded some truly useful results, especially in the area of pheromone therapies -- using specifically chosen pheromones in ways that address specific behavior problems," he offered.

"We've found that some of these pheromones help pets reduce their anxiety and the problem behaviors that can result. Research has shown that specific pheromones are even able to change specific problem behaviors. Once the levels of stress and anxiety are lowered, the underlying cause of the pet's behavior is addressed. This helps lessen and in some cases eliminate the behavior," Dr. McGlone concluded.

The SENTRY® pheromone product line now includes:

SENTRY® Stop That! Noise & Pheromone Spray - To modify destructive or aggressive behavior, this new product for dogs and cats combines noise and a specially-developed pheromone mist. The pheromone in the SENTRY® Stop That! Spray mimics a natural pheromone that almost immediately calms and refocuses pets to end their negative behavior by reducing their excitability. Unlike other noise-making products that are very temporary, the spray's pheromone mist redirects the pet's attention and behavior. The effect is longer lasting than noise alone and helps the pet not to re-engage in the negative behavior.

SENTRY® Calming Spray - The patented pheromone in the calming spray mimics a natural neonatal pheromone that reduces anxiety in a new or stressful environment. In scientific studies, this pheromone has been proven to modify both the behaviors and physiology brought on by stress. Clinical testing showed that the pheromone even reduced pets' elevated heart rates when exposed to noises and activities that create anxiety. It is an excellent choice for temporary stressful situations such as trips to the veterinarian, groomer or new visitors. It helps make dogs and cats feel secure and safe at home and on-the-go. SENTRY® Calming Spray will be available in pet specialty retailers in March 2012.

SENTRY® Calming Diffuser - This proven pheromone technology is perfect for calming dogs and cats in a specific area of the home during stressful situations such as thunderstorms or fireworks. It uses a pheromone that mimics the pheromone produced by mother cats and dogs to calm their young to reduce stress and anxiety. SENTRY® Calming Diffusers will be available at pet specialty retailers in May 2012.

SENTRY® Calming Collars - These collars are already sold in pet specialty stores nationwide and are the flagship products in the SENTRY® pheromone product line. They are an easy-to-use solution that releases Good Behavior calming pheromones scientifically shown to reduce stress and anxiety and resolve behavior problems in dogs and cats. Because they go where the pet goes, they are an excellent option for active pets whose behavior is induced by anxiety. The cat collar has a breakaway feature for safety when climbing. Collars are effective for 30 days.

"These products really mark a new era in the human-animal bond," explained Caryn Stichler, vice president of marketing at Sergeant's. "According to the ASPCA, more than seven million pets were relinquished to shelters last year, and the majority of those who are relinquishing cite behavior problems they cannot resolve as the reason. The new products are tools that pet parents and trainers have waited for, and we're thrilled that the products can potentially help reduce that huge number of pets going to shelters each year and create a happier home life for both pets and pet parents."
