New Trade Opportunities Between Canada and Spain

GATINEAU, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - March 18, 2011) - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, today announced the signing of a bilateral Industrial Security Arrangement with Spain, which opens new trade opportunities for Canadian industry to do business in Spain.

"It is a priority of the Government of Canada to provide small businesses with the tools and advantages they need to succeed in today's international market," said Minister Ambrose. "This arrangement aims to create new opportunities for Canadian businesses, especially those small- and medium-sized enterprises that are the backbone of our economy."

The arrangement is expected to generate many trade opportunities for Canadian companies. It will help ensure Canadian companies have the broadest possible access to this international market.

"This is positive news for Canadian business," said the Honourable Peter Van Loan Minister of International Trade. "Canadian companies can compete with the best in the world, confident that their government is focused on creating new opportunities for economic growth."

This Industrial Security Arrangement permits Canadian and Spanish private sector companies to bid on and participate in each other's sensitive government contracts. This arrangement applies to all contracts that include clauses from Protected up to and including Secret, and is applicable to government business conducted in all sectors of industry. Canada currently has international bilateral industrial security instruments in place with Australia, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
