New Transplant Program for Pancreatitis Patients Opens

MANHASSET, NY--(Marketwired - June 28, 2016) - Northwell Health today began its new Auto Islet Transplantation (AIT) program at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in Manhasset. The AIT program gives patients who suffer from severe, chronic pancreatitis highly specialized treatment options.

Auto Islet Transplantation is an innovative procedure for patients who are dependent upon an insulin pump or injections after undergoing a pancreatectomy. The treatment involves transplanting a patient's own insulin-producing beta cells into their liver so that over time they may gradually decrease the need to take insulin altogether.

Horatio Rilo MD, director of the Center of Diseases of the Pancreas at North Shore University Hospital and LIJ Medical Center, heads the program at The Feinstein Institute.

"Auto islet transplants bring new hope for chronic pancreatitis patients who have suffered for years with no relief from terrible pain," says Dr. Rilo. "I want us to develop immunotherapies for pancreatic cancer and then work on regenerative medicine because that's no longer the future it's the present. We are excited to be one of only a handful of centers in the US to provide this life-saving procedure to patients in need."
