New, Upgradeable, Energate ZigBee Radio Module Receives FCC Certification

OTTAWA, CANADA--(Marketwire - May 14, 2009) - Energate, a leading provider of home energy management solutions, today announced its new ZigBee Radio Module, the Energate ZRM10, has received certification from the FCC (Federal Communications Commission).

The ZRM10 improves range and increases sensitivity, working as a component in Energate's home energy management suite, integrated into Energate's Z100 - one of the world's first ZigBee Smart Energy certified thermostats. It is also core to Energate's Consumer Connected Demand Response (CCDR) solution set, which provides utilities with DR solutions for today with the ability to bridge to the Smart Grid of tomorrow.

Benefitting from its real deployment experience using ZigBee-enabled home energy management and smart metering technology, Energate has refined its 100 mW radio module design to deliver both the power output and sensitivity necessary to ensure failsafe communications with other ZigBee-enabled in-home devices and smart meters. The increased range of the ZRM10 is an advantage for many different applications; for example, it dramatically reduces the need for repeaters in multi-dwelling units.

Further, the ZRM10 incorporates increased memory storage to allow for a fully upgradeable radio module solution, over-the-air, and independent of the device within which it is installed. This flexible design provides complete support for future modifications to standards or enhanced features, including the anticipated integration of Internet Protocol standards in the ZigBee Smart Energy Profile.

The ZRM10 module is built on the EM250 chip platform from Ember, a ZigBee leader. The EM250, combined with EmberZNet PRO networking stack is the industry's most deployed ZigBee platform.

"Ember has been working very closely with Energate on their ZigBee development program," commented Dennis Natale, Vice President of Sales at Ember. "Energate is a leader in the implementation and deployment of ZigBee Smart Energy Profile technology, and we are pleased that Ember's EM250 chip enables Energate to provide a powerful, upgradeable solution."

"With this module, utilities can be confident that what is deployed today can be upgraded to support future changes to the ZigBee Smart Energy Profile, an emerging standard for home energy management communications," said Michael Delage, Vice President of Product Management at Energate. "This product enhances our growing portfolio of leading-edge home energy management solutions that help utilities with their Demand Response initiatives, while engaging consumers to control their energy usage."
