New Vice-Chairperson Appointed to the Military Grievances External Review Committee

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Dec. 20, 2013) - The Honourable Robert Nicholson, Minister of National Defence, today announced the appointment of Sonia Gaal as the Vice-Chairperson of the Military Grievances External Review Committee (MGERC). The new Vice-Chairperson was appointed for a four-year term starting on February 1st, 2014.

"The Military Grievances External Review Committee contributes to a more efficient, transparent and fair grievance process and, in doing so, ensures the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces who serve us so greatly receive the support they deserve in their challenging work environment," said Minister Nicholson. "The Canadian Armed Forces grievance system will benefit from the experience and qualifications Ms. Gaal will bring to the Committee".

Ms. Gaal has lengthy experience in labour litigation and mediation, both at the provincial and federal level. Her experience in quasi-judicial tribunals includes appointments as Vice-Chairperson of the Public Service Staffing Tribunal, as well as Member with the Canada Industrial Relations Board and the Alberta Labour Relations Board. Ms. Gaal holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Athabasca and a Civil Law Degree (LL.L) from the Université de Montréal.

The MGERC was created in 1998 by amendments to the National Defence Act, and was originally named the Canadian Forces Grievance Board. It is an administrative tribunal with quasi-judicial powers independent of the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces. The Committee reviews all grievances referred to it by the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) and provides findings and recommendations to the CDS and the grievor.
