New Volkswagen Midsize SUV to Be Produced Near Residence Inn Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, TN--(Marketwired - Aug 28, 2014) - Volkswagen is announcing the production of a new Midsize SUV to begin at the end of 2016 at the Chattanooga plant, located just 3.5 miles from Residence Inn Chattanooga near Hamilton Place. A new research and planning center is set to bring hundreds of new jobs to the Chattanooga region, including employment opportunities for more than 200 engineers.

The extended stay Chattanooga hotel is just minutes from the Volkswagen plant, with the seven-passenger midsize SUV expected to bring a tremendous economic boost to the region, as well as create thousands of new U.S. jobs. Tennessee will see a $12 billion expected income growth.

"The impact of this announcement goes far beyond the 2,000 new jobs because of the large multiplier effect of the automotive industry, and adding an additional manufacturing line and the National Research & Development and Planning Center sends a clear signal that Tennessee can compete with anyone in the global marketplace."

The Chattanooga plant is the first and only LEED Platinum certified Auto Plant worldwide, including more than 33,000 solar panels on 66 acres, as well as an eco-dry scrubber system, power efficient light bulbs, LED lighting, protected wetlands and habitats for native vegetation, specially designed roofs, and two fully restored natural creeks onsite.

Volkswagen's goal for the new SUV is to deliver 8,000 vehicles in the U.S. by 2018, following the integration of the new vehicle into the existing plant's structure. Based on the CrossBlue concept vehicle, the new SUV is being developed especially for the North American Market.
