New Year, New You, New Findings -- New Survey Reveals What Women Expect to Gain by Keeping New Year's Resolution to "Lose the Fat"

Physical Health, Confidence, Emotional Health and Sense of Control Top the List

PLEASANTON, CA--(Marketwired - Jan 21, 2015) - There is so much to gain from losing fat, it is no wonder that more than 1 in 2 (51%) women put "losing fat" on their New Year's resolution list this year. According to a new survey conducted by Kelton Research for the CoolSculpting® procedure, women who planned to make the resolution to lose fat feel they would reap benefits beyond physical appearance, including improved physical health (75%), confidence (65%), and emotional health (55%).

Three-quarters (77%) of the women surveyed agreed that when they look their best, they feel their best. Yet, many women say they lack the time and admit that they are unlikely to make the time for their appearance (40%) or their emotional health (50%) as they would for other areas of their life.

"Women need to give themselves permission to take the time and do something that will contribute to their overall health and well-being," said Dr. Jill Waibel, medical director and owner of Miami Dermatology and Laser Institute in Miami. "They are being pulled in so many different directions -- kids, spouses, work -- that they feel like they have little to no time to tend to their own needs. If my patients tell me they want to adopt a healthier and more balanced lifestyle, I encourage them to take a holistic approach and learn about all available options to help make that happen."

Dr. Waibel's advice is validated by the survey results that showed that when women make time for their appearance it was a clear game-changer in the battle of the bulge. Thirty-one percent of women who scheduled time for their overall appearance were successful in achieving the resolution to lose fat, compared to 45 percent of women who do not make time for their appearance and have rarely or never been successful.

"A slimmer, trimmer figure takes time -- the one thing most women say they have the least of," said Dr. Waibel. "Making one change and seeing the results can jumpstart a healthy lifestyle, leading to additional changes. They are motivated. For women who have a stubborn problem area -- whether it is the outer thigh, love handles or post-pregnancy pooch -- the CoolSculpting procedure is a non-invasive procedure with no downtime and lasting results. Patients typically see a noticeable reduction of fat a few weeks after the first treatment session, although it takes two to three months to fully realize the effects. Many of my CoolSculpting patients, after seeing the results from their procedure, take even better care of themselves."

The CoolSculpting procedure "New Year, New You" survey revealed some additional new insights:

  • Losing fat is not an easy goal; on average, women have made this resolution seven times in the past. Encouragingly, they are not giving up. This year, more than one in two (51%) women will make losing fat a New Year's resolution.
  • More than two in five (42%) women who plan to make a resolution to slim down in 2015 have rarely or never have been successful with this resolution in the past.
  • Nearly all (97%) who have made the "lose the fat" resolution said there are difficult barriers to overcome and cited motivation (49%) as the biggest barrier to success; followed by not getting quick enough results (22%).
  • Over three in four women admit they would be willing to give up something near and dear to them in order to lose fat in 2015. Of them, nearly half would sacrifice their most loved pair of shoes (48%) or sex for a month (46%).
  • Relationships could also be improved. Over a third (35%) of wedded women think losing fat would help their marriage, 34% of moms believe that when they are looking their best, they are able to be the kind of parents they truly want to be!

The survey was conducted by Kelton Research among 1,009 American women ages 25-54, between November 24th and December 3rd, 2014, using an e-mail invitation and an online survey.

About ZELTIQ® Aesthetics, Inc.
ZELTIQ Aesthetics, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZLTQ) is a medical technology company focused on developing and commercializing products utilizing its proprietary controlled-cooling technology platform. ZELTIQ's first commercial product, the CoolSculpting® system, is designed to selectively reduce stubborn fat that may not respond to diet or exercise. The CoolSculpting procedure is based on the scientific principle that fat cells are more sensitive to cold than the overlying skin and surrounding tissues. It utilizes patented technology of precisely controlled cooling to reduce the temperature of fat cells in the treated area, which is intended to cause fat cell elimination through a natural biological process known as apoptosis. ZELTIQ developed the CoolSculpting procedure to safely, noticeably, and measurably reduce the fat layer.
