New York Joins NCSBN Nursys.com

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - May 17, 2011) - The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NSCBN(R)) announces that New York has joined www.nursys.com bringing the total number of full participation states* in the database to 44. Nursys.com is the only national database for verification of nurse licensure, discipline and practice privileges for registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical/vocational nurses (LPN/VNs) licensed in participating jurisdictions, including all states in the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC)** and comprises data obtained directly from the licensure systems of boards of nursing through frequent, secured updates.

"We are confident that our full participation will: provide greater public protection through a coordinated sharing of disciplinary data; simplify the process of receiving licensure in other jurisdictions when New York state nurses seek to practice elsewhere; and afford the public and employers the opportunity to obtain licensure information not only on New York licensees, but on all participating jurisdictions," comments Barbara Zittel, PhD, RN, executive secretary, New York State Board for Nursing. Zittel adds, "Another very important component of Nursys is that it will ensure a duplicated data system of New York licensees that can serve as back-up in the event of a disaster."

Employers and the general public can easily utilize Licensure QuickConfirm, a free nursys.com application used to look-up licenses from a full participation board of nursing. Within minutes, a detailed report is generated, which contains the following information:

  • Nurse's name;
  • Licensed jurisdiction;
  • License type;
  • License number;
  • Compact status (single state, multistate, N/A; not applicable for non-compact states);
  • If license is active;
  • License original issue date;
  • License expiration date;
  • Discipline against license;
  • Discipline against privilege to practice; and
  • Discipline board order if provided by the jurisdiction.

In addition, nursys.com also enables nurses to verify their license(s) from a board of nursing participating in a license verification service when applying for endorsement into another state. Nurses can verify their licenses by completing the Nursys verification process for $30 per license type, per each state board of nursing where the nurse is applying. The nurse's license verification is electronically available immediately to the endorsing board of nursing.

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is a not-for-profit organization whose members include the boards of nursing in the 50 states, the District of Columbia and four U.S. territories -- American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands and the Virgin Islands. There are also seven associate members.

Mission: NCSBN provides education, service and research through collaborative leadership to promote evidence-based regulatory excellence for patient safety and public protection.

The statements and opinions expressed are those of NCSBN and not the individual member state or territorial boards of nursing.
