"NEWCASTLE" Premieres at 2008 Tribeca Film Festival

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - April 15, 2008) - The coming-of-age feature film, NEWCASTLE, will make its World premiere at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival held throughout Manhattan from April 23 through May 4.

Offering rich and stunning surfing cinematography -- NEWCASTLE -- written and directed by Dan Castle, goes deeper than finding the perfect wave; it is about discovery and what binds us to our dreams. The film immerses viewers in the lives of a teenage surfer and his mates as they experience new loves and personal tragedies. NEWCASTLE features an ensemble young cast of up-and-coming stars who are real life surfers, including Lachlan Buchanan, Xavier Samuel, Reshad Strik ("The Hills Have Eyes II," "Don't Look Up"), Kirk Jenkins, Israel Cannan, Ben Milliken, as well as veteran actors Shane Jacobson, Anthony Hayes and Barry Otto.

NEWCASTLE, presented as part of the Festival's World Narrative Feature Competition, revolves around Jesse (Lachlan Buchanan) who treads the line between success and self-destruction. A week before the Junior Surf Pro final, Jesse is determined to snatch the title from his best mate, Andy (Kirk Jenkins). Victory would mean a one-way ticket out of Newcastle and a career beyond his predestined future -- working on the dry dock with his father, Reggie (Shane Jacobson) and older half-brother, Victor (Reshad Strik), a surfing champion himself until hit with a serious injury and now the local bad boy. Jesse resolves to succeed where Victor failed -- to become a world-class champion surfer. Yet before Jesse gets his chance, he is disqualified for reckless surfing in the lead-up trial. As a diversion, Jesse's surfing mates Andy, Scotty (Israel Cannan) and Nathan (Ben Milliken) plan a momentous weekend away that includes first love and tragedy leading Jesse to discover what is really important. Principal photography was completed in May of 2007 on location in Newcastle, Australia.

Castle, an American-Australian filmmaker, has written and directed a number of critically acclaimed short films, including "The Visitor," starring Barry Otto, which received awards at national and international festivals including an Australian Film Institute nomination for Best Short Fiction Film in 2003.
