Newegg Mother's Day Gifting Poll Shows Surprising Results

In the Latest Poll, Customers Answer Mother's Day Questions Like "How Tech Savvy Is Your Mom?"

CITY OF INDUSTRY, CA--(Marketwire - May 3, 2011) - For Mother's Day, America's Moms want their tablet computers -- but a Kitchen Aid Mixer would also be nice. That's according to a series of online polls conducted by Newegg Inc., the largest pure-play technology focused retailer online.

Which Gift Would Mom Prefer?

The online poll asked Newegg visitors in the U.S. and Canada to answer questions about their Mom's preferences for Mother's Day gifts. When asked: "Which gift would your Mom like best this year?" almost twice as many Moms (45%) were said to prefer a Tablet Computer over a KitchenAid Mixer as a gift this year. 24.5% said they'd love a designer handbag.

Does Mom Have Any "Geek Cred?"

Still, when it comes to high-tech, many of the Newegg respondents weren't exactly swearing by their Mom's "geek cred." When asked: "Which of the following best describes your Mom's attitude towards new technology?" only 7% of the respondents said "Tech fiend! - First in line for all new gadgets." More than half of the respondents (55%) named their Mom as a "skeptic - one who only updates when absolutely necessary."

This ties directly into the next poll question: "How often does your Mom send you an email or a phone text message?" Apparently most of our voters have conscientious mothers, because 42% said "Never," while 42.5% said "Only once in a while." 7.5% said their Moms texted them every day, while only 8% answered "WAY too much!"

Mom and... Mortal Kombat?

Finally, in one of the Newegg Mother's Day poll's more surprising results (perhaps more the result of wishful thinking from poll participants than Mom's real preference), today's Gamer-Moms sound suspiciously like their teenage kids. When asked: "What kind of gamer is your Mom?" a full 45% called their Mom a "Slayer," with game favorites like "Call of Duty: Black Ops," "Kill Zone 3," "Super Street Fighter IV" and "Mortal Kombat." 20% called their Mom a "wanna be performer" ("Just Dance 2," "Rock Band 3") and 35% called her a "Fitness Guru" ("EA Active Sports," "Zumba," "Jillian Michaels").

Bernard Luthi, Newegg vice president of marketing, web management and customer service, noted: "At Newegg we pride ourselves on carrying a vast range of great products, many of which will make ideal Mother's Day gifts. For our Mother's Day survey, we have to admit the results were a bit surprising! We're happy to be able to provide all the gifts that any Mom could want -- and we'd like to wish all Moms a wonderful Mother's Day!"
