Newly-Formed Ghana Urban Water Ltd Charged With Oversight of the Nation's Urban Water Supply, in African Business Review

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - Jun 14, 2012) - In a report in African Business Review, Ghana Urban Water Limited's responsibility for the management and operations of the nation's 81 urban water systems is explored. The company was formed in June of 2011 and is a subsidiary of Ghana Water Company Ltd (GWCL), established in 1965 by Act 310 of Parliament based on a recommendation by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

In 1999, GWCL was converted to a 100 percent state-owned limited liability. Ghana Urban Water was formed when the government chose not to extend an expired five-year Management Contract with Aqua Vitens Rand Ltd. At that time, Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing Alban S.K. Bagbin explained that GWCL would continue in its role as asset holder with Ghana Urban Water taking on systems management operations.

Ing. Senyo Theodore Amengor, a water sector industry veteran of 32 years, assumed the duties as Managing Director of Ghana Urban Water.

"We are the subsidiary of Ghana Water Company Ltd. Our main purpose is to manage the operations of the urban water supply systems in Ghana. Our parent company has the responsibility of expanding and developing new treatment plant capacity. They build the plants, then they hand them over to us to manage and operate," says Amengor, who holds an EMBA from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, a Master of Science degree from the International Institute for Infrastructure, Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering in Delft, The Netherlands, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Techonology in Kumasi.

"Our company produces potable water for the people of Ghana. As a water supplier organisation, we have a series of processes in place that ensures potable water delivery from the source and that we have enough potable water for our consumers," Amengor says.
