Newlyweds Need to Re-Evaluate Home Contents Insurance Warns Swinton

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Nov. 17, 2009) - Newlyweds could be up under-insured by up to Pounds Sterling 10,000 according to the UK's leading high street insurance broker, Swinton.

Swinton is advising newly married couples to reassess their home insurance to ensure it provides them with adequate cover.

A survey of 1,200 Swinton customers revealed only 38% of newlyweds had amended their home contents insurance to provide cover for their wedding gifts.

With the average happy couple receiving around Pounds Sterling 5000 worth of gifts, including expensive glassware, plasma televisions and items of furniture, it's vital newlyweds declare all new items to their insurer to ensure new belongings are covered.

Steve Chelton, insurer development manager at Swinton said: "The value of home contents can rise dramatically after a wedding due to expensive new gifts.

"That combined with wedding rings, the bride's wedding dress, the groom's outfit and other new items of jewellery mean the value of home contents can increase by tens of thousands of pounds in the space of a few weeks. While some policies may offer an automatic uplift in cover during the period of a wedding, it is only temporary. We would recommend newlyweds speak to their local broker to ensure their contents are covered for loss, damage and theft."
