Newport Beach Film Festival Presents the World Premiere of This Is Your Ocean: Sharks

This Environmental Journey Features World-Renowned Artists Wyland, Dr. Guy Harvey, Shark Expert Jim Abernethy and Introduces a 14-Foot Tiger Shark You Will Never Forget

NEWPORT BEACH, CA--(Marketwire - Apr 19, 2011) - Art, science, and a bond of trust fuse together to shatter public perception of sharks in the new documentary, "This is Your Ocean: Sharks." Legendary oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle narrates this journey with world-renowned artists Wyland, Dr. Guy Harvey, and shark expert Jim Abernethy. The Newport Beach Film Festival premieres the film in its "Eco Spotlight" at the Regency Lido Theatre on Friday, April 29 at 6:30pm.

The Newport Beach premiere has special meaning for Wyland. "Newport Beach is my home and the perfect venue for this new documentary that will inspire a generation today about the importance of living sharks."

With never before seen footage, "This is Your Ocean: Sharks" focuses on the global plight of sharks and introduces the world to Emma, a massive 14-foot tiger shark. Jim Abernethy's connection and love for this animal plays a key role in shattering past perceptions about sharks. "We can no longer look at sharks as monsters. My relationship with Emma hopefully dispels that misconception and reveals the truth. It's time to share this message with the world."

Emmy award-winning producer George C. Schellenger directed this timely documentary. "Sharks play a critical role in the health of our oceans. The decisions we make right now determine the future of these animals. It's critical we see them differently and this film shifts the paradigm."

Dr. Guy Harvey says the facts are simple, "Sharks are not eating us, we're eating them. That's the big overall picture and that needs to change."

"This is Your Ocean: Sharks" was shot around the world by a team of seasoned cinematographers -- including Shawn Heinrichs, who takes us inside a shark harvest in Asia.

Ann Church, from KIDS FIRST!, says it's an adventure for the entire family. "Wyland has a way of connecting people with the sea, Dr. Harvey brings the science, and Jim Abernethy brings unprecedented first-hand knowledge of sharks along with a deep passion for these animals -- plus how could you not fall in love with Emma?"
