NewsGator Technologies: Microsoft's Launch of Vista Opens Door for Increased Adoption of RSS Technology

RSS Built Into Browsers Will Drive Paradigm Shift of How Online Content Is Delivered and Consumed, According to NewsGator Founder

DENVER, CO -- (MARKET WIRE) -- January 29, 2007 -- Microsoft Corp.'s official release tomorrow of the Windows Vista operating system, accompanied by Internet Explorer 7, will dramatically accelerate the adoption of RSS technology by consumers, businesses and content providers, according to NewsGator Technologies, the RSS leader. IE 7 is the first version of Microsoft's Web browser with native RSS support built in, which will enable users to easily subscribe to and manage RSS feeds from within the browser. Other market leading browsers, including Firefox and Safari, already have these RSS capabilities.

NewsGator founder Greg Reinacker said today that the "widespread release of Microsoft Vista and IE 7 will be the first exposure to RSS and subscriptions for potentially hundreds of millions of people. I believe we're at the beginning of an Internet paradigm shift. This shift is not about any particular technology, it's about subscribing to content. People aren't going to look for subscription buttons on a site any more, they're going to look for subscribe buttons in the application they are using. Users will come to expect that when they visit a Web page, there is a consistent and very easy way to subscribe to the content on that page. Eventually, they will likely visit their favorite search engines less often, and they will surf online less, because the content they care about will be delivered directly to them."

Reinacker continued: "The release of Vista and IE 7 will result in a rise in popularity of RSS and the fact that every desktop will now have a reader on it will tend to drive the increase in RSS feeds generated from enterprise systems. As that happens, IT departments will increasingly need to efficiently manage RSS in their organization, centrally administer subscription content and control bandwidth allocation and usage throughout the enterprise."

Reinacker is available to the media to discuss the impact Vista and Internet Explorer 7 will have on the market. Please contact Jason Mandell or Jennifer Gazin at LaunchSquad at 415-625-8555 to arrange an interview.
