Newspaper Advertising's Extra Awards Celebrate 20 Years

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 27, 2009) - To mark their 20th anniversary this year, the Extra Awards are doing what they've always done best: celebrating the best creative newspaper advertising in Canada. The Extras team culled over 100 "Ads that Made the News" - creative that turned heads, got people talking and, in a few cases, literally made the news - and they created an exhibit which made its debut at Advertising Week in Toronto.

The exhibit was a hit at many Ontario colleges, including the Ontario College of Art and Design, Seneca and Sheridan.

All of the ads, including some "Feature" ads that appear with commentary from the original creative team, can be viewed online at www.extraextra.ca.

"I am pleased that the competition has held its integrity for 20 years. Print is its own gallery, each day", said Terry O'Malley, first Extras Co-Chair.

John Finneran, former President of the Newspaper Marketing Bureau and Extra Awards founder, remembers "Terry was heavily involved helping determine the format of the awards; he was instrumental in bringing in notable creatives from the UK and USA. The other abiding memory was special guest David Abbott's talk and presentation before one of the early shows. You could have heard a pin drop. Brilliant!"

Launched in 1989 under the auspices of the former Newspaper Marketing Bureau, the competition's first co-chairs were Terry O'Malley (Vickers & Benson Advertising Ltd., Toronto) and Andre Morrow (Groupe Morrow Inc., Montreal). The judging panel also included Yves Desharnais (Marketel Foster/McCann Ericson, Montreal); Brian Harrod (Harrod & Mirlin, Toronto); Raymonde Lavoie (RTA Publicite, Montreal); Tom McElligott, (Bozell & Jacobs, Minneapolis) and Neil Patterson (Young & Rubicam, London, England).
