NextEnergy funds University of Waterloo scholarship

Local company steps forward to support students and geothermal research

Attention: City Editor, Education Editor, Environment Editor, Energy Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor ELMIRA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 21, 2009) - Elmira, ON - April 22 - NextEnergy Inc. today announced that it is funding a University of Waterloo scholarship for an outstanding student engaged in the study of sustainability and geothermal engineering.

The scholarship will be granted to a graduate student starting in the fall of 2009.

"We are very pleased with this new initiative," said Leo Rothenburg, Acting Dean of Engineering at the University of Waterloo. "We truly appreciate this kind of support, which benefits our students and adds to national efforts to drive global environmental research. It is important for us, and for Canada."

The idea of a scholarship first came up in June 2007. Randal Palach, President of NextEnergy, could see the potential of geothermal in Canada's energy future and the link to study and resources at the University of Waterloo were a natural first step to making this region a prime mover in renewable technologies.

Harold Albrecht, Member of Parliament for Kitchener Conestoga commented, "Geothermal energy will be a key source of power in Canada's future. NextEnergy's scholarship at the University of Waterloo will help ensure that this industry deploys Canadian-made technology; here in Canada and around the world."

"Reaching out to the University of Waterloo was a natural move," said Palach. "We are seeing the success of new geothermal technology in the marketplace today, and we know that in the future the potential is only going to grow. Supporting research and leading the integration of renewable energies, like geothermal, into main stream education is critical."
