Niagara Health System Expands Service Delivery With HP Networking

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - June 5, 2013) - HP (NYSE:HPQ) today announced that Niagara Health System (NHS), Ontario's largest multi-site hospital amalgamation, has selected HP Networking solutions to expand service delivery, optimize network performance, and simplify its IT infrastructure.

NHS is comprised of six hospital sites serving 434,000 residents across 12 municipalities in the Regional Municipality of Niagara, Ontario. The NHS recently completed the on-time and on-budget construction of a brand new, nearly one million square foot hospital in St. Catharines to handle the increasing healthcare demands in the region.

The new site, which opened on March 24, 2013, replaces the two older St. Catharines sites, the St. Catharines General and Ontario Street sites, and brings regional services to Niagara for the first time.

To ensure high availability of the critical medical applications that run these services, and secure network access across its multiple sites, NHS required a reliable, flexible infrastructure with centralized management.

"We needed a robust network that can handle high-speed data transmission across our hospital system and a reliable infrastructure to enable us to provision services quickly," said Jeff Wilson, regional manager of ICT technical support at Niagara Health System. "With HP Networking solutions, we improved patient care by providing doctors with fast access to complex data as well as access to enhanced diagnostic capabilities. In addition, HP provided vital expertise at every stage of this complex hospital build, from planning to successful deployment of our infrastructure, keeping the project on track and allowing us to deliver new services on schedule."

After evaluating competing solutions, NHS chose the HP 12500 and HP 8200 zl Switch Series to deliver high performance, scalability and availability at the network core, with the flexibility to deploy new services. HP Intelligent Management Center (IMC), a single pane-of-glass management application, provides NHS greater visibility across its entire network, while design, implementation and training from HP Technology Consulting Services helped NHS seamlessly integrate its new hospital site without downtime or delay.

HP Networking solutions enabled Niagara Health System to:

• Ensure 99.999 percent network availability by aggregating and virtualizing technologies at all layers;

• Eliminate complexity by managing all virtual switches as a single device with HP Intelligent Resilient Framework virtualization technology that combines the advantages of switch stacking commonly found in the access layer, with the high performance and reliability advantages of chassis type distribution devices;

• Integrate traditionally separate management tools through the software's modularity and efficiently implement end-to-end business management. Together, they provide complete management of resources, services, and users;

• Optimize network performance providing access to complex data such as images, as well as enhanced diagnostic capabilities.

HP 12500 Switch Series selected by NHS are powerful, next-generation solutions providing the capacity needed for the network core or data center. They offer an open application architecture, which enables flexible deployment options for new services, and energy-efficiency features that decrease operational expenses.

The HP 8200 zl Switch Series improve performance, scalability, and deliver a wide range of features in a high-availability platform that dramatically reduce complexity and total cost of ownership. A key component of a unified wired and wireless network infrastructure solution, HP 8200 zl switches provide platform technology, system software, system management, application integration, and network security, common across HP modular and fixed-port switches. These solutions are the industry's first highly available switches to offer a lifetime warranty.

HP's premier America's client event, HP Discover takes place June 11-13 in Las Vegas.
