Niagara Region Wind Corporation Receives Green Light from Province

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Nov. 12, 2014) - Niagara Region Wind Corporation (NRWC) is pleased to announce that the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) has issued a Renewable Energy Approval (REA) for its 230 MW wind project within the Niagara Region and Haldimand County in Southern Ontario.

The project, said to be one of the largest in Canada, will consist of a total of 230 MW of installed capacity, providing power for more than 75,000 Ontario homes.

"This project would not have been possible without the support of the many local land owners and residents of the Township of West Lincoln, Haldimand County, Township of Wainfleet, Town of Lincoln, and those communities bordering the project area who have shared our long term vision to ensure that our environment is preserved by those living today for future generations to come," said Merv Croghan, CEO of Niagara Region Wind Corporation.

"We are delighted and proud to have achieved this milestone for our wind farm project. This is the result of tremendous work from our professional team and the intense and ongoing consultations with the community, municipal, regional and provincial governments and as a result of Provincial programs and policies that enable wind energy development," said Croghan.

NRWC received a Feed-in-Tariff contract in February 2011. Since then, it has been working with all appropriate government agencies to satisfy all guidelines and regulations to receive approval to proceed with construction.

The project is set to create more than 700 jobs during the construction phase alone and will locally source $130 million of infrastructure. Additionally, through Community Development Funds, revenue will be shared with the local community throughout the 20 year operating phase.

"There is still much to do with this project before there are shovels in the ground. We will continue to consult on an ongoing going basis with all stakeholders in a transparent and open manner," said Robert Daniels, Vice-President, NRWC.

Next steps for the project will include finalizing project designs, preparing for construction and moving into our hiring phase of local, skilled workers.

With this approval, we are one step closer to helping the Province of Ontario realize its commitment to a clean energy future," said Daniels. "We are happy to be part of that mandate."
