Nimble Storage Announces Industry's First Converged Storage and Backup Solution

Data Domain and NetApp Veterans Introduce Breakthrough Architecture That Addresses the Cost and Complexity of Storage, Backup, and Disaster Recovery

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - July 15, 2010) -  Nimble Storage, developer of the first converged storage and backup solution, today announced the release of the Nimble CS-Series, the industry's first converged iSCSI storage, backup and disaster recovery solution. Designed by former NetApp and Data Domain executives Varun Mehta and Umesh Maheshwari, the CS-Series dramatically reduces the cost and complexity of primary and backup storage, cuts backup and restore times from hours to seconds, and provides a complete, cost-effective disaster recovery solution.

Revolutionary Flash-Based Architecture
The CS-Series is based on the company's patent-pending architecture, Cache Accelerated Sequential Layout (CASL™), which enables fast inline data compression, intelligent data optimization leveraging flash memory and high-capacity disk, instant deduped backups, and WAN efficient replication -- all in a single device. CASL allows organizations to reduce their capital expenditures for storage and backup by at least 60 percent, while eliminating the need for separate, disk-based backup.

"Backup and recovery is a 'top 3' pain point for most organizations since data protection processes and infrastructure can be complex and costly," said Lauren Whitehouse, senior analyst with analyst firm Enterprise Strategy Group. "Nimble Storage's approach of utilizing flash and SATA in a way that combines primary storage and snapshot-based backup in a single solution, dramatically lowers equipment costs, reduces backup and restore times from hours to seconds, and streamlines processes."

The Nimble CS-Series addresses the burgeoning time requirements and associated costs of enterprise backup. Instant, capacity-optimized snapshots on SATA drives enable storage administrators to store 90 days of backups on a single, converged storage and backup device, overcoming the limitations of existing approaches that require large amounts of expensive primary storage capacity. In addition, built-in application integration through the Nimble Protection Manager enables simplified application and VM-consistent backups for Microsoft and VMware environments. The CS-Series is optimized for interoperability with Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL Server, VMware, and Microsoft HyperV environments.

"Nimble Storage's breakthrough architecture will have a profound impact on the IT organization, on par with the server virtualization revolution," said Dave Conde, IT Director at eMeter. "With Nimble, I can streamline my infrastructure so that I no longer have to silo storage from backup and disaster recovery. That's world-changing for me."

Unique Integration of Storage, Backup, and Disaster Recovery
Nimble Storage's CASL architecture not only reduces the cost and complexity of primary storage and backup, but also provides an effective, immediately deployable solution for quick disaster recovery. With CASL, WAN-efficient offsite replication moves data to a remote storage array, transferring highly compressed, incremental block changes that require only an inexpensive low-bandwidth connection. In multiple market trials under a variety of real-world deployments, Nimble Storage's solution has delivered up to 20 times the speed and efficiency of conventional SAN replication. Because the remote replicas are exact copies of primary storage, clients and applications can rapidly and seamlessly fail over to the remote array if a disaster occurs -- eliminating the need to restore primary storage data from a backup, significantly improving RPOs and RTOs, and minimizing lost revenue.

The intuitive user interface of the CS-Series eliminates the complexity of provisioning and managing separate storage, backup, and disaster recovery devices. Using predefined application and data protection policies, new volumes can be created and fully protected in three simple steps. In addition, rich monitoring and reporting capabilities simplify troubleshooting and ongoing administration.

"After extensive research and interviews with customers we discovered a common theme: the cost and complexity of storage and backup are exhausting resources in the enterprise. IT staff are tapped, and many say they don't have time and budget to deploy a disaster recovery solution," said Varun Mehta, CEO and co-founder of Nimble Storage. "At Nimble, we've shown that primary storage, backup, and disaster recovery can come together as part of a cost-effective, fully realized enterprise-wide storage strategy."

CS-Series System Configurations and Availability
The CS-Series is available in two configurations: CS220 (effective capacity 9TB primary and 108TB for 60-90 days of integrated backup), and CS240 (effective capacity 18TB primary and 216TB backup). Each configuration offers high availability through redundant, hot-swappable controllers, power supplies, fans and drives and comprehensive resiliency capabilities. The CS-Series is scale-out ready and comes standard with advanced capabilities such as thin provisioning, replication, zero-copy cloning, application-integrated data protection, and robust diagnostics and support. All-inclusive pricing starts under $3/GB (usable) for primary storage and $0.25/GB for backup storage.

The Nimble CS-Series is in controlled release now and will be generally available next month exclusively through authorized Nimble Storage partners.
