NioGold Strikes Gold Along Norbenite Shear

VAL-D'OR, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - March 17, 2009) - NioGold Mining Corporation (TSX VENTURE:NOX)(FRANKFURT:NG1) ("NioGold") is pleased to report on results of its drilling program in the Malartic Gold Camp, Abitibi region, Quebec. Assay results were received for hole MH-08-006 drilled on the Malartic Hygrade claims.

Hole MH-08-006 targeted the Norbenite Shear structural zone between the Kierens deposit and the H Zone located on the adjoining Marban Block and Malartic H properties, respectively. A major shear zone was cut from 406.2 to 431.0 metres down hole that enclosed a 4.8-metre wide section of veining and sulphide mineralisation. This mineralised section returned gold values averaging 4.52 g/t Au over 3.6 metres. The interval is inferred to be true width as the shear fabric is perpendicular to the drill core axis.

Rock Lefrancois, President & COO, comments: "The intersection in hole MH-08-006 is of significance as it further confirms that the Norbenite Shear is gold mineralised over the three kilometre stretch between the Kierens deposit and the H Zone. We are planning to further define the H Zone with a 10,000-metre drilling program and the discovery gives us the incentive to further step out on strike to the southeast along the Norbenite Shear".

The diamond drill hole was drilled with NQ-size core in order to obtain larger sample volumes for the mineralised zones. The core was sealed and delivered by the drilling contractor to NioGold's facilities located at the Norlartic Mine site. The core was photographed for reference, logged and mineralised sections were sawed in half. Sample lengths vary between 0.5 to 1.5 metres. Half core samples were bagged, sealed and trucked to Activation Laboratories Limited ("Actlabs") in Ancaster, Ontario, an accredited laboratory. The remaining core is stored on site for reference. Samples were assayed by the fire-assay method using an atomic absorption finish on a 50-gram pulp split.

A quality assurance and quality control program (QA/QC) was implemented by NioGold and the laboratory to insure the precision and reproducibility of the analytical method and results. The QA/QC program includes the insertion of standards, blanks and field duplicates in the sample batches sent to the laboratory and a systematic re-assaying of samples returning values above 2 g/t Au by the fire-assay method using a gravimetric finish. As well, pulps grading above 0.5 g/t Au are sent to Bourlamaque Assay Laboratories Ltd. in Val-d'Or for check assaying.
