NIRI Silicon Valley Wins Best Overall Large Chapter Award and More at Annual NIRI Conference

LOS ALTOS, CA--(Marketwire - June 11, 2010) -  The National Investor Relations Institute (NIRI) announced its annual Chapter Awards and Chapter Leadership Awards winners this week at its annual conference held in San Diego. The Silicon Valley Chapter of NIRI won awards for Best Overall Chapter-Large Chapter, two Chairman's Awards -- for its sponsorship and social media programs -- and Best Member Services-Large Chapter.

The Best Overall Chapter Award is given to the chapter that demonstrates excellence in all categories, strong board management, strong leadership succession, membership services, and exemplary use of volunteers. "We were fortunate to have a dedicated, hard-working, collegial team of talented professionals to help us power-forward this year to lead our dynamic chapter. We look forward to seeing continued creative initiatives from this troupe, and the valuable, active involvement of our chapter members," said Tom Rathjen, the Chapter's president from 2008-2010, and Vice President of Investor Relations at Sunnyvale-based Accuray.

Best Member Services are awarded to the chapter that demonstrates responsiveness to its varied membership, value-added activities, and good member retention. NIRI Silicon Valley, the third largest chapter of the National Investor Relations Institute, had the second highest retention rate among all NIRI chapters. Victoria Hyde-Dunn, Director of Investor Relations at Visa Inc., was the V.P. of Membership this year.

The Chairman's Award is given to chapters that demonstrate the most innovative program or creative idea. NIRI Silicon Valley's V.P. of Board of Affairs, Tricia Gugler, V.P. of Investor Relations for Silver Spring Networks, instituted a vendor sponsorship program this year that significantly increased visibility of its sponsors, increased vendor membership by 42%, and increased revenue by 82% to help the chapter exceed its budget projections by 54%.

The Chapter received a second Chairman's Award for its social media program, led by V.P. of Communications, Brenda Ropoulos, founder of VisionArts Communications. The program, announced one year ago, established communities on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. The Chapter hosted an over-subscribed session on "Social Media for Investor Relations," moderated by Oracle's Director of Investor Relations, Paul Ziots. The standing-room only program featured Laura Graves, V.P. of I.R. for Cisco; Richard Brewer-Hay, Chief Blogger at eBay; master social communicator Shel Holtz; and Jason Golz from the Brunswick Group.

Ken Bond, president-elect of the Silicon Valley Chapter for 2010-2011, thanked Tom Rathjen for his years of service on the NIRI Silicon Valley Board of Directors and praised his role as president of the chapter. "Tom is an amazing leader and leaves big shoes to fill. His ability to coach, encourage and lead a team is unparalleled and we're going to miss his daily involvement with the Board." Encouraging members to vote their proxy, Bond added, "Based on the needs of our chapter, we have nominated two additional new members to the Board, Mike Sullivan, V.P. of Investor Relations at Applied Materials, and Tim Shanahan, Senior Director of I.R. at DemandTec. We have also targeted additional programs to support our members' interests in expanding their networks as well as expanded professional development programs for both senior and junior investor relations professionals."
