Nithburg to Receive Funding for Fibre-to-the-Home Project

Project approved under the Small Communities Fund

NITHBURG, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - July 30, 2015) - Residents of Nithburg will benefit from the Fibre-to-the-Home Project thanks to joint funding from the Governments of Canada and Ontario through the Small Communities Fund.

This project will include the extension of the existing fibre optic network to provide connectivity from Milverton to the hamlet of Nithburg. This initiative will help bring high-speed online benefits to local residents while supporting the region's long-term growth. The project announced today is among 77 recently selected projects, for approximately $260 million in joint federal and provincial funding, under the Small Communities Fund in Ontario.

The $1-billion Small Communities Fund provides funding for priority public infrastructure projects that deliver on local needs. Canada and Ontario will each provide $272 million to support projects in communities across the province with fewer than 100,000 residents. This funding will help address local priorities, supporting job creation and economic growth, thus sustaining a high quality of life in small communities across Ontario for years to come.

Quick Facts

  • The Government of Canada has selected this project for funding consideration for up to $137,375 under the Small Communities Fund. This funding is conditional on the project meeting applicable federal eligibility requirements.
  • The Province of Ontario will contribute up to $137,375 to this project.
  • Mornington Communication Co-operative Limited will be responsible for all remaining costs of the project.

"We are pleased to invest in projects such as Fibre-to-the-Home that will benefit our community by improving much needed local infrastructure. Our Government's commitment to municipalities, big and small, has never been stronger. Through the New Building Canada Plan Small Communities Fund we are investing in priority infrastructure projects that have a strong impact on the quality of life of Ontario's residents while helping job creation and economic growth."

Gary Ralph Schellenberger

Member of Parliament for Perth-Wellington on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs, and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec

"Today's investment to improve the fibre optic network between Milverton and Nithburg will ensure high-speed internet access for area residents, visitors and businesses and will help promote long-term economic growth for the region. This project is part of the largest infrastructure investment in Ontario's history - more than $130 billion over 10 years - which is supported by a number of initiatives, including unlocking the value of public assets to help make investments in transit, transportation and other priority projects. Our government is committed to building Ontario up through important community infrastructure projects like these."

The Honourable Deb Matthews

Deputy Premier, President of the Treasury Board and Minister Responsible for the Poverty Reduction Strategy

"We are very pleased to work with the Federal and Provincial Governments in bringing fibre optic services to Nithburg. It will be very exciting to deliver true high speed internet to the homeowners of this small Perth County community. Just like the rest of our fibre to the home delivery system, we will provide internet connections as fast as 100 Mbps, with higher speeds on the horizon."
