No Surprises In Ontario Throne Speech

Toronto Board of Trade says speech confirms key commitments

Attention: Business/Financial Editor, City Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 30, 2007) - The Toronto Board of Trade says there were no surprises in yesterday's Speech From The Throne, with the government closely reflecting the Liberal campaign platform.

"It was good to see the government confirming the key commitments made by the Premier during the recent election campaign," said Toronto Board of Trade President & CEO Carol Wilding.

"However, Queen's Park should have used this opportunity to speed up its promised actions on key items, such as uploading of social services costs, investments in transit and phasing out of the capital tax. As it stands, we will apparently have to wait for the provincial budget to see if these measures can be implemented more quickly."

Wilding notes the new Ontario Venture Capital Fund and Next Generation Jobs Fund hold some potential for aiding economic growth, but it remains be seen to what extent Toronto and its business community may be able to take advantage of these programs.

While the Board of Trade supports the comments in the Speech demanding fair treatment for Ontario from the federal government, Wilding says the provincial government can do more to build on its own progress in fair treatment for cities like Toronto.
