Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ONT. -- MICROCREDIT--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 7, 2006) - Toronto, Ont. & Gatineau, Québec - The National Steering Committee for www.microfinance.ca, the Canadian on-line gateway to microcredit, applauds Muhammad Yunus on accepting the Nobel peace prize on Dec.10th in Oslo.

Although not widely known, Canadians can help build microcredit capital around the world when buying Canadian investment instruments, for example terms of deposit issued by a B.C.-based credit union and low-interest bonds by a non-profit in Ontario.

The award-winning website www.microfinance.ca shows a range of opportunities for Canadians to get involved in the sector and offers stories and educational resources. The site generates thousands of hits each month and enjoyed a significant surge of activity since the Peace Prize announcement last October.

The Canadian Steering Committee started its work during the United Nations 2005 International Year of Microcredit. Access to financial services, such as microcredit, savings and micro-insurance, enables poor and low-income people to increase revenue, invest in micro-enterprise, build assets and mitigate their vulnerability in times of hardship.
