Nobel Prize-Winning Academics Institution Protects Its Network Core With Fortinet's FortiGate-5000 Series

Technion, Israel's Largest University, Selects FortiGate-5000 Series Systems for High-Performance, Scalable Network Protection

HAIFA, ISRAEL -- (MARKET WIRE) -- January 24, 2007 -- Fortinet -- the pioneer and leading provider of unified threat management (UTM) solutions -- today announced that Technion, Israel's largest academic institute and producer of two Nobel prize winners for Science in 2005, has purchased and deployed two carrier-class FortiGate™ systems to safeguard its valuable data and keep its large-scale network clean of harmful attacks.

Deploying two Fortinet FortiGate-5020 chassis-based systems as internal firewalls and its primary antivirus gateway has dramatically improved up-time of Technion's network and blocked thousands of viruses and other attacks attempting to penetrate the 5,000-node network each day.

"Technion has more than 12,000 students, faculty and administrative users accessing its campus-wide network at any given time, many of which are doing so remotely," explained Dr. Daniel Arbel, network manager at Technion. "We required a solution that could withstand heavy traffic and also needed to enforce tighter internal security to protect various servers and university sites from one another and isolate infected endpoint devices to prevent the internal spreading of attacks."

Fortinet: Unmatched Security, Availability, Performance and Scalability

Technion evaluated competitive solutions from Juniper and Trend Micro but found none could match Fortinet on breadth of security functionality, scalability, performance and scalability.

The university deployed FortiGate-5020 multi-threat security systems as internal firewalls to protect the core of its network, and as an antivirus gateway and IPS system to filter viruses, spwyare, worms and other malware from Webmail-based applications and file transfers. Fortinet's FortiGuard™ real-time security subscription services provide protection against the latest cyber threats. To ensure the utmost reliability and availability, Technion's network traffic is shared between two FortiGate-5020 devices in an active/active cluster. Should one of the devices need to be taken offline, the second FortiGate-5020 will provide the network with full protection until the other is restored.

"The Fortinet solution catered to all our needs and was easy to integrate into the core of our network. This has reduced the amount of man-power required to keep our network up and running -- which is particularly important to us as our human resources are continually stretched. In the past, our engineers spent unnecessary amounts of time cleaning PCs of viruses, but such comprehensive protection now lets them concentrate their time on more valuable tasks."

Part of Fortinet's FortiGate-5000 Series, the FortiGate-5020 system is a two-slot Part of Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture (ATCA) modular chassis that provides comprehensive security capabilities including firewall, anti-virus, intrusion prevention (IPS), VPN, web filtering, anti-spam, anti-spyware and traffic shaping. Each blade is designed to offer performance enhancements and flexible deployment allowing customers to design and scale secure networks with multiple security functions into an ASIC-accelerated security platform.

"Fortinet's FortiGate-5000 Series systems are designed to have the capacity and speed to provide protection for the core of the largest networks -- including high-traffic, high-bandwidth networks like Technion's," said Andre Stewart, Fortinet's vice president of EMEA. "With its FortiGate-5020 systems, Technion has fully satisfied all of its network security needs with a comprehensive solution that is scalable, flexible and easily managed."
