CAMBRIDGE, MA--(Marketwire - Oct 25, 2012) - HP (NYSE: HPQ) - Vertica, an HP Company, today announced that NORC at the University of Chicago -- an independent research organization with more than 70 years of leadership and experience in data collection, analysis and dissemination -- has selected HP Vertica to accelerate and scale its deep-dive analytics programs for healthcare research offerings.
NORC collaborates with governments, educational and nonprofit organizations, and businesses to provide data and analysis that support informed decision making in health, education, economics, crime, justice, energy, security and the environment.
"With the speed, simplicity and cost advantages offered by HP Vertica, we are able focus more on conducting high-quality research and analysis rather than worrying about infrastructure and hardware," said Tim Mulcahy, director, Data Enclave, NORC at the University of Chicago. "HP Vertica gives NORC a decided competitive advantage, and we already have plans to expand the platform's usage for other projects with big data needs."
HP Vertica software is able to interoperate with SAS analytics "out of the box" with excellent performance. The result is greatly accelerated deployment time and reduced time to results for SAS jobs at NORC. HP Vertica also delivers world-class performance for SAS analytics using Vertica's standard ODBC connectors, eliminating the need to manipulate the data and fine-tune the queries.
"Vertica and SAS worked together to help NORC develop a high-performance SAS environment," said Nancy Call, account executive, SAS. "Vertica connected to SAS very easily with our Access Engine for ODBC and within one day, the customer was able to run some of their SAS queries against Vertica."
"A number of our customers are using SAS for their deep-dive analytics, and we need to offer the same level of speed and performance with SAS as we do with our own in-database analytics," said Shilpa Lawande, vice president, Engineering,Vertica, an HP Company. "Here at HP Vertica, we've put a lot of time into how we work with the business intelligence ecosystem, and it shows with customers like NORC, who discover unprecedented performance with HP Vertica."
